I first started Karate at the age of 24, having been persuaded by my cousin Neil, to go along to a class with him after his brother in law, who had already been attending the sessions for a little while, had convinced Neil he should give it a go!

At the time Neil and I were both into weight training and Neil being just over six-foot-tall, and almost as wide, me the short five foot seven- and three-quarter chunky sidekick, thinking what did we need to learn to dance around in our pyjamas for?As that was our impression of Karate. Anyway, we decided to give it a go and went along to our first class.

Are you a parent that has been thinking about signing their child up for a martial arts class? If so, first and foremost, well done for considering this as nowadays, unfortunately, it seems that making sure your child can defend their self in the right way in any given situation and by the way, engaging in conflict is always the last resort, is now just as important or if not more than making sure your child can SWIM!

I have been training with the AAKA for almost 10 years now - over that time I have got immeasurably fitter and stronger; my self-discipline has improved and all while doing something I absolutely love.
The quality of the training is first-rate, and over my time with the club I have had numerous opportunities organised by the club to compete at an incredible level, including fighting against and attending squad training sessions with members of the England team - as well as working my way through the grades to obtaining my 1st Kyu black-white belt, and now training for my black belt.
