St. Michael's School is striving to be a Catholic community modelled on the Holy Family of Nazareth in the hope of creating an environment that will enable all to develop their full potential. We would like to warmly welcome you to the website of St. Michael's Catholic Primary School. Located in the town of Houghton-le-Spring, the parish of St. Michael's began educating children in 1880 as a senior school.
1912 saw the opening of an infant school. The modern building you see today was opened in 2000 and is home to 210 children, aged 4-11. The Catholic faith and Gospel Values drive our desire to educate children in a safe and nurturing environment, where all feel valued and are encouraged to try their best.

Services
St. Michael's Catholic School is a co-educational Catholic school within the Local Education Authority of Sunderland and within the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle. We are part of the Bishop Wilkinson Catholic Education Trust. The age range of children is between 4 and 11 years. As teachers we aim to develop our pupils as fully as possible.
At St. Michael's Catholic Primary School, we regard the safeguarding of children as our main priority. We believe that we all have the right to be happy, to be safe and to learn; we all have the responsibility to make this happen. We are all responsible for ensuring that each child remains safe, however the Designated Leads for Safeguarding are Mrs.
At St. Michael's, we believe that the well being of all of our children, their families and the staff is fundamental to their all round development. We actively promote well being using Five Ways to Well Being. Our Bully Busters work hard to support the staff and children by being role models, modelling how to treat others with respect and kindness.
At the end of each academic year, we complete statutory assessments for our children in Early Years (Reception), Year Two and Year Six. Children in Year One also undertake a phonics assessment. The following document gives an overview of results in each of these areas for the year 2018-2019. The inspection reviews, evaluates and plans further improvements in the school's witness to the Catholic faith and Curriculum Religious Education.
At St. Michael's, we recognise that all pupils are entitled to a quality of provision which will enable them to achieve their potential regardless of their specific need or personal circumstances. As we believe are all unique in terms of our characteristics, interests, abilities, motivation and learning needs.
