As a school we value sporting, musical and other extra-curricular activities very highly. We continue to offer daily breakfast, after school clubs and peripatetic music lessons. Our aim is for all children to participate in fun activities which will broaden and enhance their development. As the Headteacher of Bernard Gilpin Primary School I am very proud to give you a warm welcome to our website.
Our educational aim is simple: we are constantly striving to create an exciting learning paradise for all, in which children can succeed and flourish. Courtesy and good manners are at the forefront of our school philosophy. During the past decade, our school has changed dramatically. The building has been developed so that all children have access to bright, colourful classrooms all encompassing the latest technology.

Our educational aim is simple: we are constantly striving to create an exciting learning paradise for all, in which children can succeed and flourish. Courtesy and good manners are at the forefront of our school philosophy. As well as the completion of our exciting improvements to the learning environment, our school curriculum has been completely redesigned in order to continually improve academic standards and pursue new learning.
Every child and member of staff belongs to of one of our four house teams. Points are earned throughout the term and at the end of each term the winning house team receives a special treat. Florence Linden Travers was Houghton-le-Spring's very own star of stage and screen. Her first professional stage appearances were at the Playhouse, Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1933.
Lexia is a fun computer-based program. The activities focus on developing reading skills in six areas: phonological awareness, phonics, structural analysis, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The program is designed to allow the children to complete the activities independently. It will move the children on when ready, and it provides additional support when needed.
Reading Plus helps children to develop the skills that they need to be proficient readers and lifelong learners. Each term, every class goes on three Educational visits. These visits provide a fun and valuable learning experience which will link with teaching back at school. This was highlighted as a strong feature of our school by OFSTED on their last visit.
We expect each child to attend school every day unless they are ill. Please inform us of any absence from school on the morning of the first day of absence - please telephone the office (0191 917 2999) by 9:00 a.m. to leave a message with the staff or on our answer phone. We need to know why your child will not be at school so please remember to tell us what the reason is.
