Services
The Case is Altered pub is a community-owned, and largely volunteer-run, pub in the village of Bentley, Suffolk. We are open from Wednesday lunchtime to Sunday night. We have over 200 owners, many of whom live in the village, but some come from all over the world. We had a superb response from villagers, who turned up bearing gardening tools, paintbrushes, ladders - and just mucked in; we opened in Easter 2014, with paint still drying in places!
This section of the web site outlines some of the history of the Case. It's been suggested that there has been a pub in Case Lane since 1736, although not necessarily in the current building. However, we believe that the Case Is Altered certainly operated out of its current premises throughout the 19th century.
If you're bringing a large group to the pub please let us know in advance and we'll make space for you, and arrange food if required. We can book parts of the pub for a function, either the back room, or the garden room can be reserved. It is possible to arrange events outside of our usual opening hours, so if your event is on a Monday or Tuesday, we may be able to help.
We hope they will then be on the second Thursday of each month until further notice. Dates will appear in our Events Calendar as they are arranged. All performances, for the time being, will be outside. Although the pub is not currently open on a Thursday, we will make an exception for the Open Mics when we will open during the evening.
The Case has a long main bar, with benches and tables set into the bay windows. The bar was made by a local craftsman as part of our 2015 refurbishment, and is finished with a light oak top. We're pleased to report that the alcoves now offer a much cosier and draft free experience as a result. We also have a large general purpose area, known as the garden room, with patio doors providing views across the garden.

This has got to be one of the best pubs in the UK. Absolutely fantastic setting, Magnificent Staff and Service. Truly a gem Bentley village should be proud of.

Used to live in Bentley so have frequented the Case Is Altered pub quite a few times and have always enjoyed my visits.
However, since it has become community owned, it really has improved. The atmosphere is very friendly & we really enjoyed our roast the last time we visited. A great selection of local brand drinks are on offer with something new to try upon each visit.
i believe they have also opened up a little store next door to the pub where you can get your daily produce.
Can't recommend the place enough. Definitely worth a visit.

Enjoyed a wonderful 5th anniversary of the pub last night. The live music from Robbie and the boys was fabulous and the constant plates of snacks that came from the kitchen were delicious.
Being a community run pub, you are doing a marvellous job and have made it a special place to visit. Well done to all concerned and thank you for doing what you do.

This is a great pub. It's community run and feels well cared for. At the moment the food offerings are limited, so contact them before going of you're planning to eat.
The beer is well kept and they sell Adnams Sole Star (0.9%) which is great of you're driving.
If you want a snack then the pork pies and scotch eggs are locally sourced and taste good.

This community run pub is everything a good pub should be. It feels like a community, people are friendly and the pub looks good inside and out, but most importantly of all, the beer is fantastic and very good value. £3 for a pint of Adnams Southwold! They also have three guest beers which are changed regularly. The beer is kept so well it makes a lot of other pubs in the area look like amateurs.

Community owned pub staffed by owners and volunteers. First time visit and will definitely be back. Great selection of food e.g. steak and ale pie and crab salad. Good selection of drinks including real ales. Reasonable prices, friendly and efficient service. Lovely tranquil garden which is adjacent to a children's playground. We arrived on bikes but there is a car park at the rear. Easy walking, biking distance from East Bergholt at the centre of Constable country.

A great place to have a meal and a pint in the pub that tourists would love! This pub is special as the bar staff are all volunteers. It's a lovely community feel and we love having a pint, something to eat then walking the footpaths in many directions around the village afterwards. There is access to a children's play area and they also have a new community shop on-site. Check it out, it's well worth the journey to Bentley Suffolk.

We started going to the Case about 12 years ago when it was a very average country pub. Since it re-opened as a community owned and run pub in 2014 it has gone from strength to strength. I personally love the range of local ales (regular and guest ales) which are competitively priced. The food is good, wholesome pub favourites like fish and chips and steak and ale pie, in very generous portions. What I especially like is that the bar staff are all volunteers who do it to keep their village pub going, so they are there because they want to be. Well done The Case is Altered and Bentley Village!
