Unsurprisingly this is the question we are asked most frequently. Until the early 1950's the pub was called, somewhat boringly, The New Inn - there having once been an older inn, The Black Lion, further up the lane.
The landlord at the time, a well upholstered gentleman by the name of Charles Ossington who weighed in at 20+ stone, was in the habit of pulling pints or turning round to use the spirit optics while continuing to remain seated on a stool he had behind the, then, small bar.One day a regular customer came in and said "You look like an elephant sitting on a nest".

Services
Our newly built extension respects the original 16th century pub in both proportion and use of materials with the exterior clad in local stone. However inside we have some of the most up-to-date facilities in three generously sized rooms each with it's own en- suite bath or shower room. Beautifully finished with solid oak floors and under floor heating.
Situated on the western flank of Dartmoor in Devon, The Elephant's Nest is a good base for visiting a wide range of activities and attractions in Devon and Cornwall. Near the villages of Mary Tavy and Peter Tavy, obviously there is the most fantastic countryside and walking on the moor to enjoy. Other local activities include horse riding and paragliding.

Update : July 2021 As I understand it this Pub has now CLOSED. Such a shame.
Beautiful setting with a lovely garden especially on a sunny day. They're a bit over zealous in their attitude towards children though with numerous signs warning children to behave and not to enter certain areas of the beer garden. Not the most welcoming of staff either but then maybe it had simply been a long bank holiday weekend for them all.

Nice but fairly average food for an above average price (£15-18 mains but of course this isn't the entire menu). Lovely and friendly staff but with a slight issue of missing one of the orders from our table of seven, which they were apologetic for. A warm and enjoyable decor, feels like a nice country pub.

I was here very recently and had an excellent stay.
On a list of things that make a pub b&b exceptional, The Elephant's Nest scores full marks:-
My room was comfortable and well equipped; menus were varied and appealing - breakfasts and dinners were top notch; wide and educated choice of ales and wine.
If you're anywhere near I strongly recommend it.
