Before moving to Mere they ran one of Whitbread's busiest pub restaurants in Christchurch Dorset, and opening their own pub from scratch in a beautiful place as Mere was an exciting and natural progression. Now well established as a popular destination for food and drink, three luxury rooms were added upstairs, providing bed and breakfast accommodation in 2011.
Nearly 14 years on and still just as popular, The Walnut Tree is still owned and run by Mark and Sam with a great team led by Head Chef David Williams and Manager Mandy Toomer. This is the third incarnation of The Walnut Tree in Mere. The original Walnut Tree Inn stood on the Shaftesbury Road and was built in around 1840 (pictured).

Friendly staff, quality of the food, comfortable beds, wonderfully soft towels and a generous hospitality tray. Rooms recently finished to a very high standard, as good as better business hotels. Hotel was quiet, slept well in comfortable bed, breakfast was good, staff attentive and helpful. A long weekend break in a friendly and very efficiently run Inn situated in a lovely part of the UK.

Four of us had lunch there today. Food was fine. Not really a cosy English country pub that I expected, but not too bad.
Found the staff very uninterested and seemed to be in a hurry to get rid of us.
We booked by phone a few days ago but there was no booking when we arrived, it had not been written in their book. They fitted us in, but were very sullen.

A really lovely small, boutique hotel with a restaurant and bar. Rooms are a good size and quality, clean and in good repair. Staff were helpful and friendly, even offering to carry my bags. I came here expecting a typical British B&B experience and was blown away. Location is good, on the edge of the village, but a short walk from the delightful village centre. Mere itself is a gem of a place with interesting shops.

Lovely rooms which I couldn't fault. Bath and a shower in the ensuite. Evening meal choice was great and the food was very good. Would have been a five star but the breakfast came in the wrong order for me. Coffee was cold after the breakfast was eaten. But I would definitely recommend this place both to stay and to eat.

Came across this lovely place by chance as we looked for somewhere to rest on our journey home from Cornwall to the Midlands. The Walnut Tree happened to be about halfway. It's a lovely place, picturesque views all around. A good selection on the menu, and the food was really nice. Four of us had a good meal and a drink for around £66, which was we thought was good value for the quality and portion size.
It's certainly a place we'd consider revisiting if we find ourselves nearby in the future.
