The first record of a school in our catchment area is the founding of a free school in the small parish of Prestwold in 1660. This school which was in St Andrew's Church, is the direct ancestor of our school today! In 1670, the parish acquired a schoolhouse, which was built in the churchyard with rooms for teaching and accommodation for the master.
Burton-on-the-Wolds Primary School is a small rural school, approximately 4 miles from Loughborough, Leicestershire. There are 148 children on roll. Our children come from Burton, Prestwold, Cotes, Hoton and Walton villages and the surrounding catchment area. 6% of the children come from elsewhere, some from as far away as Barrow and Hathern.
Each class in school undertakes five Maths lessons a week in which they are taught objectives relevant to their age group and ability. We have adopted our own interpretation of a mastery approach to maths teaching since the introduction of the new curriculum. This means that the students will be introduced to a mathematical concept at the start of a topic and will first of all be allowed to develop their fluency at the topic.
Children at Burton have access to a wide range of Computing hardware and software. We have access to new laptops which are constantly being updated with the latest software to allow the children to develop their Computing skills. As well as laptops we also have a half class set of iPads which contain lots of up to date apps allowing the children to enhance their learning of other subjects using Computing.
At Burton children learn to read, write, speak and listen by applying their skills across a creative curriculum. We believe that children learn best from first hand experience and being engaged, so we prioritise our dynamic, creative approach to maximise interest and experience. Guided reading gives direct teaching of reading.
