Explore the rich heritage of Edinburgh by day - relax in the evening with a quiet stroll along the beachfront promenade. Enjoy a comfortable and peaceful night's rest and wake up to a hearty breakfast in this small B&B. We are proud to have attained high standards for Quality and service at Straven Guest House Edinburgh with Visit Scotland, achieving 4* status in the Guest Houses Edinburgh category.
Services
Straven is situated in a quiet cul de sac and has 5 letting rooms which are all peaceful for a restful nights sleep. All rooms have been recently refurbished with calm contemporary style in period rooms with high ceilings and small feature murals. We have 1 double bedroom with a king size bed and a further 2 rooms which can be let as either double (1 shared superking bed) or twin bedded (2 single beds).
At Straven Bed and Breakfast in Edinburgh you have a wide selection of breakfast items. We are delighted to have achieved Visit Scotland's Taste Our Best accreditation as recognition of our sourcing policy and the quality food and drink we provide. To start there is a buffet selection now being served rather than on a communal help yourself in accordance with best practice guidelines.
Straven is situated in a lovely suburb of Edinburgh which boasts a beautiful beach and range of independent cafes, bars, restaurants and shops. There is a rich heritage to the area and the name Portobello, meaning 'beautiful port', is justly given. The promenade was created in 1876 and you can enjoy an easy stroll and the views day or evening.
There is so much to do in the Capital city that we can only pick a few favourites of ours. The Real Mary King's Close is worth a mention. You are bound to be on the Royal Mile when exploring Edinburgh and this is a great way to spend some time. However as it is only accessible through guided tours it is always advisable to book.
We are lucky to be in a beautiful suburb of Edinburgh which is right on a golden sandy beach. There are lots of local sea swimmers who are out all year round for a daily swim (and don't forget the Porty dook on New Years day!). If you are a little fainter of heart perhaps a summer paddle or all year round walk on the sand or prom is more suited!

We cancelled our stay in the place because it seemed racist and impolitely attitude for part of the guesthouse.
When we look for cancellation they forced us to accept to pay the half price reservation cause there's no cancellation chance and after all, they charged us full price in our card.
Very unpleasant, be careful going there

Sinead and Chris offer comfortable rooms in a homely atmosphere, very close to the promenade for a walk along the sea, bus stop nearby for trips into Edinburgh. Altogether a wonderful spot I strongly recommend and I look forward to returning again very soon.
A big thank you to you both.

10 days here... it should be renamed The Ritz on sea! Beautiful Victorian House and our room had sea views. The breakfast was an absolute feast with a huge selection and even my fussy girlfriend found several things she loved to eat. Service is superb and I really would recommend this place to everyone!

This is just the best place in portobello. The owners are great and nothing is too much trouble. Rooms are beautifully decorated and comfortable. Breakfast was amazing ( especially smoked salmon and scrambled eggs ). Both of our daughters have stayed here and we heard their comments, so we had to check it out for ourselves and were unanimous. LOVED IT !! .WELL DONE !!.

We have been staying at this guest house for many years and is absolutely superb. Hosts are a really lovely couple and are happy to help, assist and make your stay as enjoyable as possible. Rooms are very clean, comfortable. Quality of breakfast is excellent and there are plenty of options for all tastes. Location is superb, ideal for catching local buses that take you into Edinburgh centre, Portobello beach front is literally a 2 minute walk from the establishment and we love the relaxing, family atmosphere of the area. Highly recommended.

Great position, just round the corner from esplanade along the stunning Firth of Forth and a few minutes from an excellent bus route into the middle of Edinburgh. Friendly and helpful hosts. Large elegant rooms and super big comfy bed!
Wide choice at breakfast. I was particularly taken with the little glasses of deliciously flavoured chilled porridge decorated with seeds and dried fruit. My husband was thrilled with the fabulous homemade marmalade.
Many thanks guys!

Stayed 1 August 2013 - needed to find a B&B at very short notice as my wife sitting an exam the next morning at a college close by to Straven. By good fortune, there was a double room available. Guest House very clean and tidy and 'smoke free' and Mac & Marian extremely accommodating. Good hot & cold breakfast with an array of foods available and served in an efficient and timely manner. Got the impression Mac & Marian would 'bend over backwards' to try and make sure our stay was pleasant and comfortable. Would definitely use them again. And have already recommended to friends.
