St. Patrick's and St. Joseph's is a federated school, which is situated on two sites 2 1/2 miles apart encompassing the Garvagh and Glenullin catchment areas. A large majority of children come from the immediate rural area. A significant number of pupils also travel by taxis from the Aghadowey area.
At present there are 190 pupils enrolled at the school, 8 permanent teaching staff and 8 non- teaching support staff. We aim, as a community to provide a warm and caring environment where children are happy and relationships at all levels within the school are good. The children are friendly and well behaved and enjoy school life.

Services
The school day begins at 9.00am on the Tirkeeran site and at 9.05am on the Glenullin site. We expect all children to be in their classes at this time so as not to interrupt the flow of teaching. Teachers will provide early morning supervision from 8.40am on both sites.
Parents are advised that supervision is only provided from the arrival of the first bus to the Tirkeeran site at approximately 8.20-25 and that no children should be left on school premises before this.School finishes at 1.55 pm for the children in Primaries One and Two and at 2.55pm for all other classes.

The school uniform helps our children to bond and encourages a sense of belonging to St. Patrick's and St. Joseph's P.S. Our uniform consists of a green sweatshirt with the school logo, a white polo shirt and either a black skirt or black trousers. During the third term the girls may wear a green and white checked dress which are currently available to buy from Tesco and Sainsbury's supermarkets.
As the school is a health promoting school, we ask for your support with regard to the foods you send with your child to school. We would encourage you not to send unhealthy snacks, such as crisps and chocolate bars in your child's lunchbox and keep these snacks until Friday when they are permitted.
Our school uses the Jolly Phonics programme as its approach to teaching phonics in the Foundation Stage (P1 and P2). Every year we hold a Jolly Phonics information evening for the parents of our P1 and P2 pupils. This session contains important information for parents as we explain what your child is learning at school in terms of reading and writing and how parents can support this learning at home.
AR is a computer program that helps teachers manage and monitor children's independent reading practice. Your child picks a book at his/her own level and reads it at his/her own pace. When finished, your child takes a short quiz on the computer - passing the quiz is an indication that your child has understood what has been read.
