Riverside Medical Practice
We're an established General Practice, located in the Musselburgh Primary Care Centre. Our dedicated, 40-strong team of doctors, nurses, other health professionals and admin staff continually strive to provide excellent healthcare, meeting the needs of each individual patient. We're committed to innovation, and developing our service to meet these goals.

Call from 8am: to book a same-day GP or CWIC appointment, including medication reviews. If appointments for the day are fully booked but you have a health problem which you think can't wait, please hold and we'll answer your call as quickly as possible. Our triage nurses may be able assess you.
Services
We're a long-established medical practice in Musselburgh. We're continually innovating and expanding our practice, so we can provide excellent healthcare that meets the needs of each individual patient. We work in partnership with NHS Scotland to deliver the health services our community needs. Like almost every GP surgery in the UK, we're an independent organisation that's contracted to provide NHS services.
For GP appointments: please call from 8am Monday-Friday on 0300 790 6266 - we're currently running a same-day service for GP and CWIC team appointments and these tend to be fully booked by mid-morning each day. For nurse appointments or for blood tests: please call 0300 790 6266 after 10am - these can be booked around 8-10 weeks in advance.
If you've had blood tests, X-rays or other tests organised here at the Practice, always call us to check your results. Most tests take about a week to come back with a result and for the doctor to review them, although a few take two weeks or longer. Please call after 10am or at a quieter time such as the afternoon.
We can only accept urine samples that have been requested by a clinician - that could be one of the doctors or nurses here at the Practice, or by another healthcare professional working somewhere else. Please ask one of our Reception team for the form. Urine samples must be brought by 3pm, as samples are collected and taken to the laboratory at this time.
Allocating these set times mean we can have extra staff in reception at these times only, which allows the most people possible to be upstairs in the call room answering patient phone calls at other times. Please note that we can't book GP appointments at the front desk, please call us to book an appointment.

Unbelievably inefficient service from this practice stemming back way before Covid! I once arrived for a 7.30 am appointment and after being
informed 3 times that the doctor knew I was waiting I then found out that the doctor wasn't even in the building!! Almost impossible to get an appointment - even when you call at 8.00am you can't join a queue and are asked to call back later. You can then wait for 30mins on the phone only to be told that there are no appointments left and to call back the next day.... I have never encountered a generally worse practice in 50 years! AWFUL is the only word

The staff are great but it's almost impossible to get an appointment. I've had to take the day off work as it took a full hour to speak to a receptionist and hours later I'm still waiting for a call to see if I'm deemed worthy of an appointment!
You can only get on the day appointments, no routine or advance booking, no open surgery, no check ups..
How many patients conditions are getting more serious because you can't speak to your G.P. about your symptoms?
In the UK news today, a man died as he couldn't get a face to face appointment for an ear infection which led to a brain abscess and meningitis

This practice surgery are well aware of its problems stemming back a few years now. I'm new to the area. I've been registered for 18 months. I've never been so shocked at the lack of capacity is has to assit the local community of patients it has registered on a daily basis. It has almost become a "norm" to expect. Which is appalling when it comes to modern day health care!
How many receptionists does this place actually have?? How many patients? And how many appointments a day in relation to each doctor on duty??? Where are the facts?? Because I am starting to wonder if its all lies!

Just a complete shambles it’s a disgrace to call it a medical practice. You can’t get through on phone lines, you send an email to state you need a sick line only to be told you have to call the surgery. This place was well slated in the press and supposedly sorted but has never changed.

Opted to inscribed myself at a family address so I could change surgery due to awfully never-ending awaits for a symple procedure. I know I should stick to the centre that belongs to my address but hundreds of hours of my life spent on hold on the telephone, appointments, referrals, sick notes, prescriptions you name it. I thought of moving out of Musselburgh just to avoid the slow proccess to contact my GP or as said, for any interaction with them at all.
Nothing bad to say about staff apart from they are definitely short of staff... And in all honesty, my has life s change for the better since

Getting an appointment at this GP is a nightmare. You can’t even book in advance it has to be the same day. We are expected to sit on hold for upwards of 30 mins to be told we can only have a phone appointment. I had to drop off something to be tested and the woman gave me no information of what would happen moving forward. Just told me to call
My GP … so more sitting on hold… it’s a mess. Needs sorting. Can imagine there are lots of people not being seen or being bumped because it’s too difficult to even speak to a doctor or a nurse. Please please sort it. It’s not good enough.

Can never get through, and they some how think that everyone only works 9-5 having appointments made at 8am only is acceptable.
I wonder how many deaths the incompetence of this medical practice have caused. Worst GP Surgery I have ever been to.

Having previously had a bad experience trying to get an appointment, today was completely different.
Took a while to get through but when I did the receptionist was very polite and helpful, got a call back within a short time and was referred to the appropriate department who also didn't take long to get back to me. Felt like I got somewhere today and Riverside deserve some positive feedback for a change.

It is difficult to get an appointment at times, however I think most practices are struggling currently. I agree that the process may need some streamlining however what I find most important is that the staff are helpful and friendly. I seen such a lovely, helpful and accommodating Doctor today - Dr Forrest ( I think I remember correctly). This is what I value from appointments, and what I presume is most important to have when visiting a GP. Phone lines can be frustrating but the amazing work of the people in the practice shouldn't go unnoticed in these reviews.
