Hypnotherapy is of proven value in the treatment of a variety of conditions including addictions, especially to nicotine (see stop smoking); phobias; panic attacks; and stress related symptoms such as chronic anxiety, tension headaches and insomnia. Hypnotherapy can be used to develop self confidence and to improve performance in a variety of spheres of activity ranging from sports, music and drama to presentations and exams.
We are all born with a reflex action that helps us to escape from acute danger. It is called the "fight or flight" reflex, and comes into play if we suddenly find ourselves in danger and need to quickly escape or perhaps fight. Our cave dwelling ancestors would have had use of this reflex action if suddenly confronted by a sabre-toothed tiger and would have been running away before even thinking about it.
My own experience includes treating people for a variety of phobias including fear of flying, spiders, snakes, wasps, heights, eating in public, shopping in crowded places, claustrophobia, agoraphobia and needle phobia. Phobias are irrational fears of something and very often the sufferer will know perfectly well that their fear is unnecessary.
Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, can be successfully treated by hypnotherapy. IBS is stress-related, and the therapy aims to relieve the symptoms of the condition by helping to control stress. The symptoms of IBS are usually intermittent bouts of abdominal pain or cramps, often with a feeling of abdominal swelling and episodes of diarrhoea.
Self-hypnosis is a relaxation technique that is both simple and straightforward to learn and practice. All that is required is 10-20 minutes of uninterrupted time, a quiet comfortable place and a comfortable chair, sofa or bed. The idea of self-hypnosis is to try to achieve a similar state of relaxation as is achieved during a hypnotic session with a hypnotherapist but to practise it alone and in your own time.
