Automatic Cafe
Automatic is a bar and restaurant based in Bury's theatre and arts centre The Met, serving the people of Bury all day. We are part of Hollinworth & Price; a family of independent food and drink companies established by Lee Hollinworth & Lottie Price. H&P own and run a number of outlets in Manchester & Bury, including bars & restaurants for arts centres & theatres as well as our own craft brewery.

We also manage festival bars and supply beers to outlets across the North West. Automatic has been at The Met since 2002. Hollinworth & Price has built a reputation delivering a heart-warmingly different approach to food and drink.

Its 12:15 Sunday lunchtime when me and wife decided to have lunch at the Automatic!!
Arrived at the door before another couple who were told they may have to wait for food and were seated. I noticed the cafe appeared about a third full with approx 16 customers (6 tables) so no problem. I asked politely for a table for 2 to be told sorry no tables.
I have worked in hospitality all my life running many restaurants and I am amazed in these times when our businesses need to survive they dont want custom.
I understand if they were short staffed but at least offer the customer a drink at the bar or

Took my son for a birthday lunch. He's vegetarian and I'm not but there was a fantastic choice for both of us. The food and service both excellent.

Lovely food & very friendly staff. My husband had steak & it was cooked beautifully. The only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is that the steak was served with skinny fries but that's just about personal preference.Would definitely recommend.

I pre-booked for a recent Friday lunchtime. I’d also installed the app – one of those you can use to order food on arrival. I’m sure it was fine but it was pleasing that, in the event, our order was taken at the table by a member of staff.
It was my first visit here for a couple of years. They’ve re-decorated and I think the seating, with banquettes down the cenral aisle, looked new also.
Service was efficient and the staff were very polite and friendly upon arrival, leaving and during the course of the meal
The food was great also. Full English for me and my two (rather younger) fellow

After being practically whisked to the Automatic on an Xmas meal with work, I was concerned that due to our party size we wouldn't receive the same level of service as 11 chickens in a trenchcoat pretending to be a fully grown adult.
Just like when I thought that the moon was actually the underside of the sun, I was wrong. We were treated wonderfully, attended to by professional staff with nothing to lose and with hearts of bold.
The food was almost perfect (the desserts leaving something to the imagination) and was served promptly and without piles of paperclips intermittently strewn throughout

I have had several visits to Automatic and must say each one has been great across the board. I always find the waiting staff to be very friendly and helpful. There is a large selection of food on the menu and the quality is always great. I've never been in the evening for drinks however daytime/afternoon has always been great.

Another one of my Friday 5pm beer haunts to end the working week. Similar to the Clarence it hosts a wide range of locally brewed ales/lagers & also has a whisky bar for all you connoisseur's out there !!
They also do various lunch specials at reasonable prices and they guarantee you to be in and out within 45 minutes with their "workers lunch".

After a terrific meal in their sister venue The Clarence nearby, we popped to Automatic to check it out as it'd recently been refurbished.

It was a Friday evening so, as expected, it was absolutely packed out with drinkers (and a fair few diners). Lots of tables but almost every seat had been taken, we had to wait a few minutes to be seated. The lengthy bar has plenty of room to stand though.

As the night's designated driver (aka 'mug') I was on the soft drinks, which was probably the reason I wasn't too keen on the place. I'm going to sound like an old man but you

I wanted to try an independent coffee shop near my parents' house and this was one place that I'd been to before, but I wasn't drinking coffee back then.

Automatic was ok: I probably won't go back as it was nothing special and the cake I had was clearly unmemorable. If you're in Bury and you want an alternative to Costa Coffee or a greasy spoon, this place will do for the moment, but it's not worth making a special trip to try it out.

I really want to like this place, I do but I just find I can't. The menu is varied and has some great sounding things on it, each time I'm in Bury I'm tempted by the thought of trying something I saw on the menu, even though I know this place isn't all that good. I have no idea why and I've put my foot down on going again.
I've eaten here at least four times now and each time it's been a little bit more of a let down. The food is all promised to be great quality but I have not found that to be so. Last time I went (about a week ago) I ordered the black pudding
