If you've been away, it's great to see you again. And if you're new to Canterbury, it's our pleasure to welcome you Canterbury's independent, authentic Japanese soul food restaurant. Since we opened our doors in 2013 we've established a great reputation and served around a hundred thousand customers.
Things went a little quiet during lockdown, so we used the opportunity to improve the restaurant for you. We've reconfigured our dining spaces to offer more space between tables, and a more connected and efficient service. We've also created a quiet, secluded garden dining space. Our popular menu is largely unchanged but we have added some new healthy options, and we have a large and varied selection of plant based dishes.

Services
Tamago is all about the food that Japanese people crave - the food that makes them feel good. It's a long way from the bland, standardised, corporate offerings found elsewhere. Everyone involved - from the owners to the staff - loves Japanese food. So come along and share the love!. Founded in 2013 by Anglo-Japanese owners, the restaurant quickly established a good reputation on the Canterbury dining scene.
We started with probably the most amazing Pork Gyoza I've ever had, served with a simple soy side. These were perfect; steamed well so that the filling did not fall out when you bite them in half, and lovely and caramelised on one side from their time in the pan. And the filling, oh the filling. Rich, flavourful and that perfect balance of sweet and umami.

I had a lovely meal here with my wife, where I had the Sweet and spicy chicken rice bowl. It was of a very good quality and also the rice was cooked perfectly.
To me, it was like a posher and much better version of Wagamama's, which is only a compliment.
The staff were helpful, friendly and polite.
Thanks again, I'll visit again some time in the future.

Order from the table on your phone, pay on order completion and a great selection of Japanese favourites, what more can you ask for. Staff are super friendly and approachable. After having spent a chunk of time in Japan it's nice to have somewhere close to home that gives that home from home feeling. Really enjoy it here

Have been to Tamago a few times in the past and was always pleased by the service and food. The latest time we visited was the first time since covid reopening and it felt completely different. Staff were friendly enough but seemed clueless and inexperienced. Food was average at best. Real shame as this was originally a real hidden gem in Canterbury.

I got the ramen and taiyaki and it was pretty good. The ramen was slightly saltier than i liked but still good. I would recommend the taiyaki as it was really delicious. The lychee slush wasn’t nice it tasted like water with lychee syrup. Staff were friendly but the qr code ordering took away the interaction but is convenient for people who are a bit shy.

It is not a bad restaurant, don't get me wrong. But the food was not spectacular. It was ok...it would be ok for a place to have lunch near work, but there was nothing really special to go on purpose for a dinner. Pricewise, I don't think this has the best price/quality ratio, to be honest.
Really hated the qr code ordering and I hope they don't keep it when restrictions are lifted completely. That kind of ordering is completely characterless and lazy and tells a lot about the effort a restaurant puts into customer service. I personally like to have a menu on my hand and talk to the staff.

Absolutely delicious dinner at @tamagocanterbury tonight! Yasai tonkotsu, kimchi tofu bento box and agedashi tofu... would definitely recommend, so full of flavour. We didn't opt fully for the vegan menu but… if you are they've got loads of choices and what we did try was amazing. The tofu was the most delicate and beautifully cooked I've ever tried!

Great starters including the yummy kimchi tofu, cheese spring rolls and giant shrimp!! , for the mains : didn't like the Ramen as much as was hoping to but it wasn't bad. Dessert: The coconut cheesecake and the cake with filling in it was delicious! The fact that they had halal meat was the real icing on the cake for me. Will defo be going again. Great service with a smile and a really busy restaurant with a friendly vibe.

Reasonably priced and tasty Japanese street food. Good selection of ramen and katsu curry, and decent location/ambience.
Staff weren't necessarily the quickest on a slow Monday night, but were very friendly and personable.
Would happily be back for lunch or dinner anytime I have a ramen/katsu craving....
