Framework Knitters Museum
Immerse yourself in the sights, sounds and smells of this unique place where families lived and laboured together to shape a region's industry. One of the few places left where you can experience the living and working conditions of Victorian craftspeople. From family activities to creative projects; unique experiences to community celebrations.

Established in 1829, the Parker family ran this important knitting site for 100 years. Now their legacy is kept alive with our maker's shop stocked with unique finds and creations.
Services
The history of framework knitting is an amazing story of inventiveness, creativity, poverty and riots. And it all started right here in Nottinghamshire!. The award-winning Framework Knitters Museum is one of the only places left in the country where you'll find the working and living conditions of this important, contentious and dangerous industry perfectly preserved for you to experience and explore.
Inside, you're transported back to Edwardian times with a range of authentic exhibits including the oldest Fish & Chip Shop in the world and items that may bring back memories for some visitors! The Village Museum is open between April and October, on Thursdays between 10am and 12 noon and Bank Holiday Mondays between 2pm and 4pm.
7. Relax with a cuppa and a cake in our tea room or in the community garden if the weather's fine. Second visit to this fascinating museum, a veritable storehouse of social history, staffed by knowledgeable, enthusiastic folk. Some steps may prove difficult for the elderly or infirm but there's plenty to appreciate at ground level.
Ruddington is easily accessed from Nottingham, Derby, Loughborough, Leicester and junction 24 of the M1. As you approach the village, follow the brown signs to help you find the museum in Ruddington village centre. Chapel Street is a cul de sac with very limited space, so please don't park here unless you have mobility problems.
We welcome visits from groups and societies, but please note these must be booked in advance. The more the merrier! There's no minimum group size, although we do apply a minimum cost for groups of 10 or more people and you'll need to pay a deposit at the time of booking (see below). You can book a daytime or evening group visit at any time of the year, subject to availability.

The volunteers were very informative. Strong feelings of the life back then when it was all men (and boys) working hard to earn a living. An amazing place.

A little gem of a museum providing an insight into social history of the time of industry surrounding knitting and hosiery. A fascinating glimpse of machine engineering and the hard struggles of workers of the period. A great way to spend an hour or two for the whole family.
