Red squirrels have been found in England since the end of the last Ice Age and are part of our native fauna. The non-native grey squirrel was introduced to England in the late 1870s from America and is the primary cause of decline of the red squirrel. It does so by out-competing red squirrels for food in deciduous and mixed woodlands and transmitting a virus, the squirrel poxvirus, that is lethal to red squirrels.

The Lake District has an astoundingly interesting geologic history. Initially formed by volcanic eruptions and tectonic action 450 million years ago, the area surrounding dale head hall was then carved by the movement of glaciers in the last ice age, leaving a terrain of many different rock types, dotted with lakes, tarns and waterfalls.

Quaint country house hotel, with stunning views over the lawns to Thirlmere. The lounge and dining room décor were a little dated, but otherwise clean.
The rooms are well appointed, with a comfortable bed, soft linen, decent sized TV with Sky.
Breakfast was well cooked, though the lack of Marmite™ was a surprise and big let down, it's an essential if toast is offered for breakfast.

I read some other reviews before arriving. So we didn't expect food from the restaurant, however breakfast was fine and filling, toast full English and fruit. We were very impressed with the hotel (yes it's a little dated and creeky) staff were lovely grounds and setting are impressive. No problems at all except for the weather. Would definitely stay again.

Very disappointed- had booked for a special weekend. Room was ok but water took 30 seconds before it came out of the tap and shower pressure was pathetic. No bin In the room, no tissues, very Minimal tea / coffee.
No restaurant so had to drive to Keswick for meals (after a long days driving / walking). Breakfast could be requested from 8.30!! We had hope to be well gone by then For our walk up helvelyn. Ours did not arrive until 8.50 after I came looking for the kitchen.
Breakfast was a paper bag with a cheap long life croissant, unripe Fruit and a terrible sausage sandwich using the cheapest
