Irrespective of any partial closure or collaboration with another school, the safeguarding of all our children remains our top priority. At this time, our school will continue as normal in supporting our vulnerable children and if anyone has any questions regarding this they are asked to make contact with the school office at office@heronsdale.co.uk.
Here at Herons Dale Primary School we are very proud of what we can offer; we have a good range of facilities that help us to fully engage all our pupils in their learning and our children enjoy coming to school. We strive to be flexible in our approach to ensure that we meet the needs of each child as each child is unique regardless of their age, ability or diagnosis.

Services
The school was originally built in 1982 to cater for pupils aged 4 - 16 years with moderate learning difficulties. The school is maintained by West Sussex County Council and admits boys and girls aged 4 - 11 years who have a Statement of Special Educational Needs or an Educational, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
Every year we have 3 topics, one per term, that are the driving force, for the skill-based learning that happens in each class. As each academic years draws to a close, we look at the following year's topics and choose one that will be the inspiration for the following years class names.
We choose a topic that allows classes to be named after something that has a clear sign, symbol and object of reference to support and promote our 'Total Communication' ethos in school. The whole school follows a 4-year rolling cycle of topics. One per term. Although the topics are the same throughout the school, the learning that takes place in each class is skills based and unique to the individual and the class.

The Management Committee is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all our children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Safeguarding is a priority in the school due to the vulnerability of the children that we teach. Safeguarding includes Child Protection, On-line Safety, Safer recruitment of Staff and general security and safety of the building and all other aspects relating to Health and Safety.
Equals (a commercially produced curriculum devised for children with learning difficulties). At Herons Dale our aim is to provide bespoke learning opportunities for all our pupils, ensuring that each individual is enabled to make maximum progress in all areas of learning. We have a 'growth mindset.' We have no fixed expectation of what any of our pupils can achieve and set aspirational but realistic targets for all pupils.
