We are an ambulatory practice with three equine only vets covering West Hampshire, South Wilshire and East Dorset. Celtic Equine Vets was founded by Alan Hough with the aim of providing experienced equine vets offering a professional, reliable, personal and cost effective service. Our friendly office team of Sophie Budd, Jenny Woodhouse, Joanne Leak and Laura Russell our office manager, are on hand to answer your call.
We will always do our best to return calls for advice on the same day, and to fit in appointments to your convenience. We aim to provide the highest standard of routine and emergency care at your premises for all types of horses and ponies from professional athletes to happy hacks. Alan, Caroline and Emma are all experienced in all aspects of equine practice with their own particular interests.

Services
The son of a vet and originally from Galway in the West of Ireland, Alan graduated from University College Dublin. Since graduating Alan has worked exclusively in the UK, initially in mixed practice and then solely equine practices. Alan obtained a post graduate certificate in Equine Practice in 2009.
We carry out routine health checks as standard with all vaccinations and dental procedures. We recommend all equines have a thorough annual health check as this will help detect many conditions early which will help improve the outcome of any treatment undertaken. We provide our own emergency out of hours cover with all calls taken by an answering service who then contact the vet on call.
The mileage bands shown are approximations. To find out exactly which visit charge will apply please use The AA route finder and use our postcode of SO43 7FY as the starting point. Amazing vets - kind, professional and realistic. Needs of the animal come first, but consideration given to owners feelings too - a rare commodity in modern vets.

I have used Celtic Equine Vets for my horse for a number of years now. Originally I was recommended to Alan for equine dental work but quickly moved all my equine work to the practice as I was impressed with the professionalism and the dedicated approach of the practice vets. Over the years they have responded to both routine and emergency calls for me. Alan himself is always very calm, reassuring and knowledgeable but I have dealt with a number of other vets at the practice and always been impressed. In addition to the day to day practice work Celtic are happy to provide information about the

I can't recommend Celtic Equine Vets enough, Alan and his teams knowledge and professionalism are second to none. The staff in the office are super organised, helpful and friendly.
You can always count on Celtic Equine Vets to be there for you and your horse they have the latest diagnostic equipment and its so much easier to be able to have detailed work ups/investigation/treatments etc carried out at your yard.

Firstly I'd like to thank Caroline for everything she did for my boy Harbour. In all honesty, when I found him unable to move in the middle of the field I thought it was all over, but Caroline's cool head and quick action enabled us to get him in and in and safe. Turned out he'd impaled himself on something, which required a standing operation. Caroline's surgical skills to unearth the rather impressive fragment of wood buried deep in his leg were second to none. He's not the easiest of horses, being a young ex-racer thoroughbred, but I love him and we are eternally grateful and so glad you've

Celtic Equine agreed to come and do blood tests and swabs for my 3 horses as well as flu vaccinations for export. Claire chased one of my horses around the yard and his stable for almost an hour to try and get a blood sample. I asked for him to be sedated but she refused, saying that it wasn’t an option because he is needle shy. She then wanted to twitch him against my wishes but it soon became clear that wasn’t an option as he was so scared.
Finally she Agreed to sedate him with Sedalin which I had to administer. Whilst waiting for that to work, Claire did the vaccinations, blood tests and

I cannot recommend Celtic Equine Vets enough. Starting from the office staff who are really helpful, quick to respond and keep everything easy and simple to book with always calm no matter how stressful the situation is.
All the vets at the practise are knowledgeable, helpful and even when your horse isn't being overly helpful still maintain a smile and take their time.
The breadth of knowledge is great too and access to equipment means that things that can be diagnosed on site rather than having a horse go to hospital. Over the past few years my horses have not made things simple but luckily
