Hypnosis is a naturally occurring altered state of consciousness similar to daydreaming or the drifting process we experience just before we sleep. We go into trances when we stare at the TV and 'there's nothing on', or we drive somewhere and don't remember passing through somewhere on route; half-asleep on the train; doing housework; being at a boring meeting at work, and so on.

Nobody knows how to go to sleep. Sleep is an unconscious process. It is a passive process. If you try to it doesn't happen. People who sleep well, lie down, let their mind drift, their body relax, and they drift into a trance and then before they know it they drift off to sleep. Most of the time insomnia is caused by anxiety.
