The club was originally within the grounds of the old Wheatley Hall, owned by Sir William Cook. The club later relocated to its current site of Armthorpe Road in 1934, following the sale of Wheatley Hall and the industrialisation of the site. Being on one of Doncaster's largest hills and sand based, the course boasts fantastic drainage, maintaining its playability all year round.
A kind opening hole here at Wheatley Golf Club. A well struck tee shot of approximately 200 yards will leave around 150 yards into the green which has two bunkers guarding the front left and right of the green. Anything to the middle of the large green is a safe and good shot leaving you a reasonable birdie putt to any flag.
A good tee shot is required down this tight second hole. The fairway narrows around 150 yards from the hole with three bunkers lining the right side of the fairway and trees to the left. The hole also has four bunkers surrounding this green making the second shot as important as the tee shot. A strong stroke index 4 for the second hole of your round.
Risk and reward. A drivable par 4 for the longer hitters that offers a fantastic chance for birdie or even eagle. Taking on the green requires a well hit drive, long enough to clear the fairway bunker 40 yards short of the green, and straight enough to avoid the additional four bunkers surrounding the green, one left and three right.
