Services
The story of Anstruther Fish Bar and Restaurant has its roots firmly in the fishing tradition of the East Neuk. Fishing has been the lifeblood of owners Robert and Alison Smith's families for generations, and both are proud to continue these centuries of service - now preparing and serving the finest Scottish seafood, rather than taking to sea in pursuit of it.
Robert Smith - co-owner of the award-winning Anstruther Fish Bar and Restaurant - comes from a long line of East Neuk fishermen, tracing his fishing ancestry back to the 1700s. His grandfather Robert Smith OBE served on steam drifters from the East Neuk before becoming a prominent skipper at the port of Granton, Edinburgh.
It's not just the delicious, fresh food that attracts tens of thousands of diners to the Anstruther Fish Bar each year. Our staff work hard to make sure everyone who pays us a visit receives friendly, efficient and polite service from the moment they arrive at our famous restaurant. But, even if customers are queueing, our servers make sure they're kept informed about waiting times.
The highest standards of freshness, quality, cleanliness and sustainability have made Anstruther Fish Bar and Restaurant a favourite destination for food lovers. And we're proud that this passion for giving our customers the very best has been recognised with a string of top awards. We joined the small, elite band of Seafish Fish and Chip Shop of the Year winners in 2008/09 after being judged the best out of some 12,000 outlets across the UK.
With East Neuk fishing ancestors dating back centuries, Robert Smith expected to follow his forefathers to sea. Colourblindness meant he couldn't skipper a trawler, however, so Robert launched his own East Neuk fish processing business, Argofish, in 1980.

Now, as well as selling to local fish merchants, Argofish supplies the freshest Scottish fish to the famous Anstruther Fish Bar and Restaurant - co-owned by Robert and his wife Alison since 2003.With such a strong heritage in the fishing tradition, Robert knows that freshness, quality and consistency are the keys to keeping his discerning local customers satisfied.

The staff were excellent and helped in every way possible. My partner and I both had the haddock and chips which was so very tasty. I am so glad we got the chance to try this famous chip shop. Also the ice cream reminded me of my childhood, ice cream, tinned fruit, skooshie cream and a meringue/snowball. We will def be back.

The food was tasty, with reasonable prices. The sausages were smaller than we had hoped, but were nice. The ice cream was delicious. The Irn Bru flavour, especially. Irn Bru flavoured things are always a risk, but this is the best I've had by far.

Stopped off for dinner after a birthday walk on the beach. Last time we were here was the last outing we had with our old dog, so tinged with a bit of sadness, but as always the food was top notch, and the staff were friendly and helpful.
The fish is as fresh as can be. The batter is light and fluffy and the chips are crisp on the outside, light and fluffy inside.
Basically perfect fish and chips.
Can't wait to go back again soon.

Wife had the fish as recommended to her, me being contrary I went for the red pudding supper. A mistake on my part, I don't have a great sense of taste and all I could taste was salt 😏 so the dog got most of mine. Can't fault the restaurant though, everything made fresh to order, the batter was excellent as were the chips, and the home made tartare sauce was amazing, according to the wife, it being wasted on me. 😃

Great food, amazing light batter on the fish. Couldn't have had better. A bit of a wait once you're in but that's to be expected with how busy it was (Saturday evening). We ate in. Good prices.

The taste of that battered fish and chips is unique, you can actually taste the fish, really nice, I would go back with no doubt. We had it to take away as it was a sunny day and we enjoyed watching the boats.

This place has won many awards over the years, and while I do agree that the fish and chips are excellent, I have had better. The portion is huge - you get a fish and a half! And the chips are cooked perfectly, but the batter slightly let it down for me. During Covid, for take away, you have to order and queue up outside, but the service is still friendly and relatively fast. There are still seats inside the restaurant.

The best fish and chips for sure! There's an enormous queue for takeaway, but we were lucky enough to get a table right then and there. All the regulations in place, everything is spotless, there are screens between each table, the toilet also spotless, the staff super friendly, helpful and approachable. I can't wait to be back!!! And that's not all... Ice cream is so delicious!!!! Yummmmm
