Hattie and her friendly team welcome you to the Hope & Anchor, a delightful former 17th century coaching inn. Like many of the inns and pubs in the area it was constructed from former ship's timber, and it even boasts its own ghost - Ted! This traditional pub is known for its warm atmosphere and great staff, and the spacious beer garden with beautiful pots and flowerbeds, several tables, a heated smoking shelter and a barbecue is a real suntrap through the afternoons.
For those wishing to stay a little longer, the pub also boasts three comfortable en-suite letting rooms, with flat screen TV, wifi and tea/coffee making facilities, available at very reasonable room only rates and special rates for long term lets, ideal for contractors working in the area (minimum 3 months).

The staff are incredibly friendly & the prices are quite reasonable.
My -1* is due to the lack of disabled access, the entry points are quite narrow with steps. This isn't accessable for a wheelchair user unless you sit outside.
I was here for an event that was taking place in the basement (I wasn't aware of this prior to arriving), I managed to get down the flight of stairs which was quite narrow but was limited to remaining here as the staircase was too narrow & busy to keep holding everyone up to keep going up & down.

Basement venue for bands is brilliant - would give five but whilst food and beer upstairs is good quality and staff working hard the place was struggling to deliver what they take orders for. We waited over 45 mins for the full order but had to go downstairs otherwise we'd have missed the band - information on food progress was reactive and inaccurate.

A Brakspear's pub with accommodation available that's not far from he railway station & across the Reading Rd from The Terrace.
Beer's fine (Oxford Gold, Hobgoblin etc.) Staff friendly with live bands on the weekends.
The Sunday roasts are truly excellent proper roast potatoes, good selection of veg that is neither over nor under-cooked. Usually a choice of three plus puddings.
