We are an independent Optometrists and Contact Lens Practitioners based in Bristol. Established in 1935, we have been providing excellent eye care to locals for over 75 years. The practice began under the name of John Goatman and was then passed on to his two sons. During this time, Peter Goatman served as the optometrist whilst Michael looked after the dispensing.
In 2002, Gordon Batham bought the business along with Michael Killpartrick and Alan Smith. In 2013, Gordon Batham took over full ownership of Goatman & Batham opticians with his wife Julia with the aim to expand the range of products available and continue the family feel that had been present in the practice since its beginnings in 1935.

Services
Regular eye examinations are important for everybody, with or without sight problems. Our tests do not only ensure that you enjoy the highest possible standard of clear and comfortable vision but also allows a check of the health of your eyes, which can sometimes offer an indication of general health issues.
We offer a comprehensive private eye examination which includes fundus/retinal photography, a full visual fields test to DVLA standards and glaucoma testing using Tonometry. The test also allows us to detect signs of cataracts, to make the necessary adjustments to your prescription and arrange a referral to a specialist.
Our opticians take a comforting and careful approach to children's eye examinations. We use a range of paediatric testing methods, including 'objective testing' which allows us to assess the health, prescription and muscle status of an eye without needing to question the patient. Children can feel happy and at ease having their eyes examined while we can obtain a very accurate evaluation of their vision and eye health.
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging test that uses light waves to take cross-section pictures of your retina, the light-sensitive tissue lining the back of the eye. With OCT, each of the retina's distinctive layers can be seen, allowing our optometrist to map and measure their thickness.
At Goatman & Batham, we are always expanding our services into new areas, aiming to improve vision quality and eye health for all. We recommend Overlay testing for people who may have reading difficulties or visual discomfort as a result of Dyslexia or other conditions. Some children and adults experience visual/perceptual distortion when reading a page of print.
