Our mastery approach is focused around teaching for depth rather than breadth; concepts are taught to the class until the majority have mastered them, whilst also being presented with opportunities to deepen understanding through looking for patterns, making connections through solving calculations in a variety of ways, and drawing upon number sense to make generalisations and solve problems.
At Highcliffe we teach phonics through Sounds-Write which is a systematic synthetic phonics programme. Sounds-Write teaches Conceptual Knowledge and Skills through Initial Code and Extended Code. 3. Phoneme manipulation - the ability to insert sounds into and delete sounds out of words. This skill is necessary to test our alternatives for spellings that represent more than one sound.
Children develop quickly in the early years and a child's experiences between birth and age five have a major impact on their future life chances. A secure, safe and happy childhood is important in its own right. Good parenting and high-quality early learning together provide the foundation children need to make the most of their abilities and talents as they grow up.'
At Highcliffe Primary School, we intend to deliver a curriculum that is broad, balanced and ambitious for all children. We want our children to build knowledge and skills which will enable them to become lifelong learners with enquiring minds. We have placed knowledge at the heart of our curriculum to help our children develop vocabulary and understanding of key concepts that will equip them for further learning and later life.
At Highcliffe Primary, the values of democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, respect for, and tolerance of, the views and beliefs of others, are interwoven into the ethos of the school. They underpin the curriculum entitlement our children receive and are reflected in the positive relationships that we promote within, and beyond, our school community.
