Hillside
Hillside is a charming 18th century thatched country house, overlooking the Victorian town of Ventnor and backing onto National Trust Woodland, at the foot of St Boniface Down. Having continuously been refurbished to the highest standard, Hillside fuses contemporary Scandinavian interiors with charming rooms, creating great harmony within the environment and a unique feel of 'hygge.'

With panoramic sea views and a southerly aspect, Hillside poses proudly on the Hillside of Ventnor. Soaking in all available sunshine, making the house and its grounds as warm and welcoming in the summer, as they are sheltered and cosy in the winter. In these unpredictable times, have comfort and confidence in the need to change your booking with us.
Services
The history of Hillside begins in the area to the west known as Steephill where Mrs. Mary Groves owned and kept an inn. When her lease expired in 1801, the landowner, Lord Dysart, provided her with a new building at the foot of St. Boniface Down which became known as the New Inn and then Groves Hotel.
We believe in craftsmanship and the pleasure of producing tasty, energising, nutritious and good looking dishes. When fish is caught fresh from the sea, eggs laid from our hens, fruit picked from the tree and veg dug from the ground -we believe our produce should be respected with careful preparation and creativity.
Thompson's, a contemporary 'chef table' restaurant offering a modern British menu inspired by both the flavours of the island and Robert's own experiences. The Taverners is what all good pubs should be: great local food, a good sprinkling of hoe-wielding locals, and a glass of something decent to drink in its generous beer garden.
At Hillside, we have carefully selected and directly imported beautiful wines and champagnes from our French wine producer in the Languedoc. As well as choosing a special El Salvadorian Coffee that we grind fresh from the bean after it has been roasted locally over at Island Roasted.

From a smooth glass of red with your artisan evening meal or a warming cup of coffee and a slice of home when you get back to Hillside in the late afternoon we always have something to sip on for the occasion. We have directly imported some of the finest wines from Mas de Daumas Gassac, a French wine producer from the wine region Languedoc, since 2013.
Fresh air, especially hand-made Vi-Spring beds, crisp white linen and goose down duvets and pillows. All play their part in ensuring a good night's sleep at Hillside - Not forgetting the company! The bedrooms are comfortable, light and functionally luxurious with the majority of the rooms having sweeping views and all of them an attractive outlook.

Awful experience. The owner is one of the rudest people I have ever encountered in my life. He shouted at me and stormed off upstairs because I asked if my partner could have a coffee in her room. He then ignored us the following morning when we said good morning. To top it off he asked to look inside our bags when we returned home at 9.30pm to see if we were trying to "sneak" food into our rooms. Truly shocking. You are not allowed food or hot beverages in your room. Lights out by 10 pm. It does not feel like you are staying in a hotel, more like someone's house who doesn't want you there. We

Lovely place in a great setting - such good views. Relaxed downstairs area for reading / having a cup of tea. Gardens looked great as well alas the weather precluded us using them! Hosting was super attentive. In short - recommended as its lovely!

A true treasure of a hotel. I have stayed at Hillside on 4 occasions and some of my fondest memories are in this charming bed and breakfast. A wonderful place to relax, rejuvenate & enjoy the sea. Hope to make my fifth visit soon.

A total experience, starting from the greeting at the door, through pre dinner drinks in the art filled reception rooms, to a stunning dinner of freshly picked salad, fruits and seasonal home grown vegetables. The service was amazing, with a wonderful selection of wines, nothing was missing. Very much looking forward to more of the same this year. Thank you Team Hillside!
