History at Radstock Primary School is engaging and thought provoking. It is taught through learning projects in cross curricular topics which change each term. We want our children to appreciate how History has shaped their lives, through learning about significant events and people, such as the impact of the Roman Empire or the excitement of landing on the Moon.

We aim to have a hands on approach where ever possible: with a visit from an old fashioned bus, fossil hunting, a local history trail and a Roman day being some of the ways we bring history to life. Through well planned activities, the children are encouraged to think about and question historical sources and develop a sense of chronology.

Here at Radstock, we aim to bring learning alive through a hands-on approach and foster a love of learning in our pupils. We are preparing them to be global citizens and as a consequence, work to provide them with a set of skills which will support them in the future. We aim to be a fully-inclusive school, where each pupil's achievements are celebrated and there is an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust, built around our school values.
At Radstock, we have chosen 8 core values which we believe are integral to being a successful member of the Radstock Primary School community: Respect, Ambition, Determination, Self-belief, Team-work, Ownership, Courage and Kindness. These values are discussed throughout the school year through lessons and assemblies.
At Radstock Primary School, we place a great deal of emphasis on our Secrets of Success, 8 important learning behaviours that are based around the principles of Growth Mindset. They are Understand others, Don't give up, Try new things, Work hard, Concentrate, Push yourself, Imagine and Improve. We believe that if children exhibit these learning behaviours, they will be able to achieve anything!
Friends of Radstock is the Parents and Teachers Association for Radstock - a charity run by volunteers, where we always welcome new members and ideas for fund raising activities. We have always been very lucky at Radstock to have a fantastic group of volunteers, teachers and parents who run our Friends of Radstock group.
The pupils of Radstock were so inspired by the 2012 Olympic Games that we decided to set up our House system based around the legacy. The children voted for the following Olympians & Para-Olympians to be the names of the houses: Jessica Ennis; Ellie Simmonds; Mo Farah and David Weir. Each House has a flag designed by their team and each year, House and Sports Captains are elected to carry out responsibilities for the coming year.

Today, with my business Immersive Theatres, I delivered a 5m digital planetarium experience to 60 Year 2 pupils at Radstock Primary School. I was warmly welcomed by the staff and found the hall prepared just as I had requested. The morning was well organised with all groups arriving on time. The excited but well-behaved students enjoyed a rich selection of content: peering up at the planetarium night sky; visiting the International Space Station; handling a famous meteorite and learning about the Solar System and different types of stars. Thank you Radstock Primary for a very pleasant visit.

This was a fantastic school when Mrs. Derrick was headteacher but sadly it has gone downhill after Mrs. Slocombe took over. Under Mrs. Derrick the Ofsted rating was always "good" but as soon as Mrs. Slocombe took over it went down to "needs improvment".
