Oakwood Primary School
Oakwood is set in a beautifully wooded site in the north-west of Southampton. The primary school opened in 2014, when Oakwood Infant and Junior Schools, here since the mid-1970s, became one. We are first and foremost a friendly community of pupils, staff and families, where everyone can feel welcome and do their best.

Everything we do is guided by our commitment to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and to our ethos of Respect, Believe, Achieve. Our website and our blog will tell you much more about us, but feel free to contact or visit us! We are currently working towards the National Online Safety 'Safe Remote Education' accreditation, showing our commitment to keeping children safe online.
Services
A Rights Respecting School teaches about children's rights but also models rights and respect in all its relationships. Children's rights are central to all aspects of UNICEF's work and we are working to make sure that the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child is embedded into all our work.
The best interests of the child must be a top priority in all decisions and actions that affect children. Governors work as a team. They are responsible for making sure the school provides a good quality education for all pupils. My background is in Project Management where I currently work as Head of Programmes and Projects at Ordnance Survey, a role I feel gives me lots of useful attributes to be an effective school governor.
Every child has the right to relax, play and join in a wide range of cultural and artistic activities. Every week, we check the attendance of each house and award cetificates - and we have lots of other ways of working and competing for your own house too, including House Days and Sports Day. Our House Captains and Vice Captains are elected in July each year and they regularly write updates for our newsletters.
The Convention applies to every child, whatever their ethnicity, gender, religion, abilities, whatever they think or say, no matter what type of family they come from. We recognise that people have different needs, and we understand that treating people fairly does not always mean treating them the same.
A child with a disability has the right to live a full and decent life in conditions that promote dignity, independence and an active role in the community. The code of practice is the statutory special educational needs and disability (SEND) system for children and young people aged 0 to 25. You can read our Information Report and Local Offer, which sets out how we comply with our duties.
