Teesdale is really magnificent walking country, whether you want to go for a relaxed riverside stroll or a more bracing hike, there are numerous footpaths and public rights of way to be explored. Two long distance footpaths pass through Middleton-in-Teesdale: the famous Pennine Way and the Teesdale Way.
Upper Teesdale is a unique and enchanting natural environment. The views are stunning and the fauna and flora are diverse and abundant, with plants and wild flowers species such as the stunning Spring Gentian that are unique to Teesdale.
This is due to the area's remarkable geological formations; the ramparts of the Whin Sill (a huge edifice of volcanic rock) down which flows the River Tees in great steps producing dramatic waterfalls such as High Force, England's largest waterfall. This special earth heritage has earned the area the status of the first 'UNESCO European and Global Geopark'.

Have just had a weekend at the Teesdale Hotel, breakfast, dinner excellent quality and very tasty staff were friendly and welcoming beers are top in the bar section only let down could do with a revamp of decoration I think this has been put back due to covid but think this is in hand requires moderning apart from that excellent value.

Enjoyed one night stay here. The bedroom clean and tidy but very tired and dated however the food was superb. The evening meal was delicious. Drinks very reasonably priced and excellent service from the staff especially the lady at breakfast. Although the room was disappointing we cant wait to make a return visit

We have stayed here at few times but I doubt we would go back, the rooms have gone from shabby to uncomfortable and
this meant we did not sleep well. The food is interesting. It used to have old school charm. But nowadays it's just a bit too tired. I have to say the staff although young were very attentive. Wouldn't recommend

The attitude of the bar staff was far from pleasant. Visited on the Saturday for a drink with our family and were met with a far from warm service. Visited the following day, sat outside for a drink and asked about food. We were told they had stopped serving (arrived at 14:30). This was fair enough but the same far from warm member of staff as the previous day refused to allow us to eat some chips from the chip shop opposite at their picnic table whilst consuming the hotels drinks. We would have stayed for more than one, silly policy enforced by a less than polite member of staff.
