It is our aim here at St Mary and St Thomas Aquinas to foster a caring and loving environment by the encouragement of all members of the school community. We aim to ensure a welcoming friendly approach where parents and visitors feel comfortable and are positively encouraged to participate in the life of the school.
Naturally, you want to give your child/children the best education that is available and help them grow in an environment that is caring, supportive and committed. We aim, therefore to create an atmosphere at St Mary and St Thomas Aquinas, which is warm, caring, stimulating and disciplined. A school in which every child has the opportunity to fulfill their learning potential.
In addition to being Head Teacher at St Mary and St Thomas Aquinas, Miss White is also a National Leader of Education and a Diocesan Inspector. Member of the Senior Management team, Mr Craig teaches in Year 5 and coordinates Religious Education, Catholic Life, Collective Worship and Art throughout the school.
The findings do not change the overall effectiveness judgement of outstanding from the last section 5 inspection. The school consistently delivers excellent achievement and exceptionally high standards in English, mathematics and science. There is a committed and very talented team of staff led by an inspirational and very hardworking headteacher.'
It is unknown when the school first opened but it was certainly in existence in the 1840's. He reported that it was impossible to keep the children at school in consequence of the great demand for their labour, which commences in the coal pits at 7 years of age. In general, he found it a pleasing school and creditable to the teachers and mangers.
