At Whickham Parochial we believe that every child is entitled to enjoy their childhood, celebrate their individuality and reach their full potential. We are so proud of our loving, nurturing school and the high standard of educational provision we offer to all of our children. We are a fully inclusive Church of England school at the heart of the Whickham community.

Our school began its journey as the parish school of St Mary's Church in Whickham and our links with the church and Father Barry Abbott continue to be one of the defining features of our school. As such, our vision is to aim for excellent teaching and learning for all children, supporting them to reach their full potential whilst developing in our all pupils the values of Christianity.
Services
Collective worship continues to be a very important part of our day at Whickham Parochial. We hope to return to normal assemblies as soon as it is safe to do so, and when we do, they will be organised as detailed below. For now, assemblies happen on a Monday in phase bubbles.

On Tuesdays the school follow the collective Worship theme in their classroom, Wednesday each class focuses on hymn practice (signed rather than sung) and on Thursday staff do a collective worship and reflection either on the weekly theme or on something relevant to their class. On Fridays we have a Zoom assembly and worship on the theme of celebration.
We are a fully inclusive school, and children of all faiths are welcomed in our school. However, we fully believe that it is in the very best interests of all children and of the community in which they live to instil in our pupils the values of Christianity. In doing so, we hope to support children in becoming compassionate, respectful, forgiving and tolerant young people - in short, people who live the Christian values.
The distinctive Christian character of the school is demonstrated in the way we treat one another and in the way the we nurture the character of our children. We feel that, whatever a child's faith, or even if they have no faith at all, learning to live well with others, to serve their families and communities, and to grow in love and acceptance of others is of benefit to them and everyone around them.
We talk to the children about service to our friends, to our families, to our community and to our world. Developing the value of service in children is good for their mental health, as it develops their sense of worth and an understanding that, no matter how young they are, they have the power to help others.
At Whickham Parochial we work hard to embed a culture in which children take a greater responsibility for their own learning and become independent thinkers. We hope to produce children who strive to improve and are able to discuss the steps they will need to take to accomplish this end. In order to accomplish this, our staff have participated in two full days and several evenings of training.
