We have reverted our dining room & lounges to their former uses - but request that guests are respectful of other' need to remain as socially distanced as possible and kindly request that they maintain wearing masks while moving around in public areas. The Royal Oak is a small family run hotel ideally situated beyond the "Jaws of Borrowdale", six miles south of Keswick.
Once an 18th Century farmhouse and former miner's tavern, the Royal Oak has been providing accommodation for visitors and walkers for over one hundred years. It has been run by the same family since 1970 and is still the perfect base from which to explore the beauty of the northern Lake District. As traditional hotels have become increasingly rare, we take great pride in maintaining our homely atmosphere and excellent value for money.

Services
The main house is a fine example of a Cumberland Longhouse and dates from about 1750. Formerly a farm & miner's tavern our dining room, lounges and bar retain and reflect this heritage. Our style is more akin to a quality alpine pension or catered chalet than that of a modern boutique hotel. Across the old farmyard is "Merrybreeches" our converted barn with views of Stonethwaite Beck.
Here at The Royal Oak Hotel - Rosthwaite we welcome everyone and experience suggests we can make those with minor disabilities comfortable and facilitate an enjoyable stay. The hotel is principally a "walkers' hotel". The main house was formally a two storey 18th Century Farmhouse and Miner's Tavern; additional annex rooms occupy converted barns.
Whether you are a Mountain Biker or Road Cyclist you are very welcome here. We are just off the Sea to Sea (C2C) Cycle route and eight miles from the 19km Altura Trail in Whinlatter. We are on Cycleroutesuk' Honister Loop and handy for several of their other excellent tours. Why not yump around the Borrowdale Bash (See Video) on your full sus or use us as a base to train for the Honister and Newlands stages of the The Fred Witton Challenge.
The Royal Oak Hotel Borrowdale near Keswick in the Lake District is a dog friendly hotel. Although Collies are our most frequent visitors, we've also welcomed everything from West Highland Terriers to Irish Wolf Hounds. Provided your dog is socialised, clean and well behaved you are most welcome to bring your best friend.
Traditional English breakfasts and freshly prepared home cooked dinners sustain even the most energetic of guests. Our set four course evening meal changes daily and uses local suppliers wherever possible. Great care is taken to create varied and appealing meals. Vegetarians and guests with special dietary requirements are catered for with equal importance so feel free to discuss your specific needs with us.

A lovely old fashioned walkers hotel. A set meal in the evening (so no choice). Limited WiFi, so good news for those of us who detest loud phone calls and perpetual texters. A great cooked brekky. Pleasant little bar. Lovely staff. Nice rooms, but the water pressure for the shower needs a pick me up. Soon to be renovated so upgrades expected, but hopefully without losing its ambience and charm.

This is olde worlde service at its best. The rooms are clean and comfortable with WiFi. The hotel has many little rooms to snuggle in. Food is served at 1930 when the gong is sounded. There is no choice...you have whatever is cooked. But you will enjoy it. All food is cooked on the premises, vegetables are served in a separate dish, it is absolute perfection. If you are a vegetarian give them adequate notice and you will not be disappointed. Cooked breakfast including porridge was superb. Hurry...the owners are retiring and selling this wonderful establishment to the hotel next door.

Here’s a place we would definitely stay in again. It had a hotel feel in terms of size and amenities, but had the warmth of a cozy B&B. A large, comfortable room overlooking a flowing stream welcomed us. The bathtub was wonderful after a hard day’s hike. Dinner was delicious, and we got to know many other hikers over our meal.
WiFi was somewhat limited in that you have to go to a particular lounge to be able to use it, but since it wasn’t pouring rain, it was a very minor inconvenience.
We’d especially like to thank Susan for all her help. You took very good care of us, Susan!
