Devonshire Bakery Ltd. is a family run business which was started at the turn of the last century in Porter Street, Runcorn, by Fred Crowther, great grandfather of the present managing director. He was a farmer as well as baker. In those days the bread was delivered by a horse-drawn cart! In 1928 the Edinburgh Arms was purchased in Devonshire Square, Runcorn, and was named the Devonshire Cafe.
This eventually combined a shop, cafe, bakery and ballroom, the latter being the renowned local venue for 'the Dev' dances and wedding receptions. Fred's two sons, Cyril and Reg, joined him in the business with Reg ultimately becoming the sole owner. In 1953 the second Reg (now retired) ran the business after completing his national service.

Services
We can provide garnished platters of freshly made sandwiches and savoury products direct to your office. If it's an office celebration, personalised cakes can easily be produced for you. Please ring for more information and pricing on this service. If you are entertaining at home or just need quick, delicious, homemade food for your freezer.
If you can't get through, e-mail your name and number and we will get back to you in opening hours. To allow the bakery to prepare your order with the care it deserves, we require any advance orders to be into us by midday the day before you collect. We are unable to take orders on the day due to staff levels.
At the Devonshire Bakery, we believe that where there is great food there should be good quality bread. In addition to our three shops we supply local coffee shops, pubs and restaurants. If you are interested in stocking any of our homemade products please get in touch. Due to the current situation wholesale is collection only.

Pies, pastries, croissants and cakes: they're all here, and all most excellent. Friendly staff, even under the duress of dithering customers and a long queue - definitely worth a visit for your bakery fix. Top tip: bring yourself something with which to keep occupied in case you too are behind customers who are trying to buy the entire shop...

Poor customer service. Two speeds, slow and stopped. This is not due to their covid restrictions, but poor management. Any reasonable person including myself is showing patience, especially with our local independent retailers, but their inability to serve a queue is very poor. Four people in the outdoor queue of 8 ahead of me all gave up and left - all had already queued for at least 15 mins. TBH overrated and overpriced.
