North Hertfordshire Museum aims to increase the understanding and enjoyment of the culture, heritage and environment of North Hertfordshire, using the museum collections to tell the stories of the people who have lived and worked here. Our vision is to create a welcoming museum that plays an active role in the life of the District.
Services
We offer a number of bookable talks given by our expert museum staff. The talks need to be pre-booked and cost 55. Talks can be held at the Museum (for up to 40 people), at your own venue (for as many people as your venue can hold), or online using platforms such as Zoom. Please ask for further details.
The museum has three galleries containing permanent exhibitions - Discovering North Herts, Living in North Herts and The Terrace Gallery - and two temporary exhibition spaces. In the permanent displays, you can discover the history of the district, from 90 million years ago when marine reptiles swam the sea that covered us, through the arrival of the first people and the gradual transformation of the landscape to the present day.
In this gallery, follow the story of the district in the order it happened. Journey through time and see how our area changed and developed through prehistoric, Roman, medieval, Victorian and recent history. It highlights how and why North Hertfordshire has transformed over time, from 90 million years ago when it was under water, to the urban planning that has shaped the district today.
The museum has spaces where we display temporary exhibitions, using objects from our own collections or objects borrowed from other museums. The large exhibition gallery is downstairs, off the Discovering North Herts gallery, while there is a smaller space - The Arches - in the upstairs Terrace Gallery.
If you have something that you think might be of interest to our curators, which you would like to offer to the museum, please contact us in advance. You can do this in writing, by email or by telephone, supplying as much information as you can. It would be helpful if you can include a photograph of the item with your description.

The museum was really interesting and had a great collection, some of which found locally too which was great to see! It would be great to have a little more hands on events for school aged children for in the school holidays. The old fashioned toy event we went to today could have been so much better, it needed to mention a age range when promoted… as I feel it was a little more catered to under 4s, which was a bit disappointing. We made the best of it anyway and looked at the museum for a while instead. Maybe a craft, or a activity involving the museum or even a treasure hunt would be
