Gray Opticians
We test your eyes with state-of-the-art equipment and take time discussing our findings with you, giving advice and recommendations. We have a stunning selection of frames from contemporary Continental and British designers and a full range of classic designs - the choice is yours.

The most important part of your glasses are the lenses, as it is through these individually crafted pieces of a special plastic material that you will see the world clearly. We believe in being cutting edge when it comes to our equipment, so, for example, we have a special camera which photographs your eyes, enabling us to compare future pictures with past ones.
Services
Since 2009, the practice has been owned and run by Mrs Claire Hawkins. Claire graduated in Optometry from UMIST, Manchester in 1985 and gained experience in several practices before starting at Gray Opticians in 1994. I am privileged to lead our dedicated team of staff. This practice has always enjoyed a good reputation for putting the needs of our patients first.
Good eyesight is crucial in making sure a child develops to their full potential both at school and socially. It's especially important to look after children's eyes - the eye is still developing throughout early childhood so if problems are treated early, it can make a lasting difference. Yet research shows that around 20% of school-aged children have an undiagnosed vision problem.
We have a comprehensive selection of spectacle frames from modern to classic, exclusive to economy and can also supply specialist frames for a variety of sports. In addition to designer glasses such as CK, Nike, Elle, Jaguar, Rip Curl, Esprit & Jaeger, we have frames from contemporary continental and British designers, which you will not be able to find on the High Street.
The most important part of your glasses are the lenses, as it is through these individually crafted pieces of a special plastic material that you will see the world clearly. Most spectacle lenses are made of CR39, which was developed by Columbia Resin. It was their 39th attempt at making a suitable material, which led to the name CR39.
They are simple, convenient to use and many wearers feel they offer better and more natural all-round vision than spectacles. The majority of contact lenses worn in the UK are soft lenses which are replaced frequently on either a monthly or a daily basis. If you have astigmatism, we may need to use a toric lens and if you need a different prescription for near vision than you use for the distance, then you may need a multifocal lens.

I have experienced 30 years of excellence from all the staff. This visit was even better. In my moment of panic, they were all calm and reassuring, as well as quick and efficient. Unbeatable.

As my dog ate my prescription sun glasses i needed both an eye test and new glasses!
I was very impressed with the Covid safety measures in place to ensure everyone's safety
The examination included photo of eyes which was very reassuring.
The lady helping me to chose the frames was very helpful and nothing was too much trouble
The glasses only took a few days to arrive and I was very pleased with the look and fit - just need some sun now
Thank you Gray's for great service - can thoroughly recommend this optician

They've looked after me for almost 20 years, and even during the pandemic they provided me, by mail, with new glasses that matched my old prescription. Thank you.

Upon my recent visit I did not find this optician to be particularly child friendly. I left disappointed but since then have appreciated a phone call admitting that at time of covid people can be understandably easily stressed and their approaches to children are hopefully being improved. It's a difficult situation for everyone.

I've always had excellent service from all the staff at Gray Opticians and they always offer a cheery greeting! I’ve been using them for more years than I can remember and I always feel valued. A really friendly, family feel to the place as well.
I would highly recommend Gray opticians!

I've been a patient at Gray's Opticians for at least 25 years. I attend my annual (or even 2-yearly) eye check / contact lens check...so I'm regular, but not frequent. I haven't had cause to spend large sums of money with Gray's - as my prescription hasn't changed much over the years and I wear contact lenses...so no frames needed.
AND YET - when I have had the rare occasion to "ask a favour", they have - without fail - always helped with my requests.
ALL staff are friendly, professional and helpful.
I would strongly recommend this Optician/Optomoterist

I would like to say a big thank you to all the staff here. The eye tests are always thorough and the findings are always explained in terms I understand with some humour and always very friendly. The ladies on reception are so friendly and patient. Just had my new glasses fitted. Very happy with them and with the service I received. Definitely 5 stars.
