Born in Lancashire, and educated at Merchant Taylors' School, Crosby Honours Degree in Materials Science from Sheffield University 1980. Army officer in Corps of Royal Engineers 1980 - 87, including Falklands campaign, and Gateshead TA service, still involved with the CCF.

Services
We have an extensive range of frames from companies who only design spectacle frames (not clothing or handbags). They offer excellent design, quality and value. Look out for Charmant, Stepper and Ferrucci. We can particularly recommend frames designed by Hans Stepper which are some of the lightest, most comfortable frames on the market.
Nearly all spectacle lenses are made from various types of plastic resin. Basic plastic is fine for small prescriptions but if the first 'number' on your prescription is more than +/- 3 then you will benefit from what are called 'High Index' plastics. These are thinner and lighter than standard lenses.
Being an independent practice, we use a large range of manufacturers' lenses. We keep 30-lens packs of the most popular daily disposable lenses, and delivery of most ordered lenses is the next day. Toric, multifocal and gas permeable lenses take a little longer. The lenses themselves are only part of the story.
We specialise in sunglasses which can take your optical prescription, but all of the models can be bought with 'plain' lenses too. For sports we have sun protection from well known makes like Bolle and Serengeti. Our best sellers are frames by Ferrucci, Ted Baker and Metz. Lenses can be in fixed tint plastic, variable tint, graduated tint or polarised.
Blepharitis is a stubborn infection or inflammation of the lid margins and requires frequent treatment to control the symptoms of itching and irritation. We stock lid wipes, foaming lid cleanser, cleaning pads, and The Eyebag for doing hot compresses on the lid area. We have contact lens solutions by several manufacturers (Sauflon, Cooper Vision, Alcon) including preservative-free solutions for sensitive eyes or part-time lens wearers.
