Comely Bank Publshing
Welcome to the Homepage of Comely Bank Publishing, set up in 2012 to offer publishing opportunities for local Edinburgh-area authors using 21st century. We felt that that many excellent writers were failing to have their works published. Instead, publishers and agents had become too cautious, grasping at poorer-quality work: perhaps it carried the name of an established author or a bankable name such as a reality TV star.

It was clear that the future of literature required that bright new talent be nurtured as it had been in the past. We looked to develop a new concept of "community publishing", focusing on developing sales and publicity in the local Edinburgh area, and if books were successful, into the wider Scottish market.

Gordon Lawrie founded Comely Bank Publishing in 2012 to create an association through which aspiring authors could self-publish with as little pain as possible. A former Modern Studies secondary school teacher in Edinburgh, his academic background is in political science and history.

Gordon is primarily responsible for managing Comely Bank Publishing's administration, including ISBNs, distribution of books, print management and cover design (although he tends to leave the actual design to professionals if possible).Gordon's debut novel Four Old Geezers And A Valkyrie was published as an ebook in 2012, then in print in 2013.
Not so long ago I read a book that had been given to me by a friend: 'You'll enjoy this, I think.' The friend was right, because I did, a great deal. But I found myself flicking over some of the submissions - all novels, of course - that we've received here at Comely Bank Publishing over the years.
The Man From Outremer is a swashbuckling tale of treachery and action. Set largely in Scotland at the time of the early Scottish Wars of Independence around 1300 AD, it follows Derwent, a Scottish Crusader-turned-clergyman, and his involvement first of all in the Fall of Acre in Palestine, then later as Prior of Roslin in Scotland.
Like his other fiction, Gordon Lawrie's The Blogger Who Came in from the Cold is set in contemporary Edinburgh. Danny Marwick is a 'blogger' - he writes material to fill up catalogues and websites of firms looking to attract customers to buy their products. He's by far the best in the world and his work is in great demand.
The Piano Exam is a short story which is a prequel to Four Old Geezers and a Valkyrie. Edinburgh schoolteacher Brian Reid has an ambition - to pass a fairly basic piano exam. After trying a number of teachers, he finds one who might be able to help him. The story is free - although Amazon charges its minimum charge, plus tax - and can be downloaded in a number of formats.
