Since 1973 we've worked to unearth and amplify the most vital, exciting voices we can find, wherever they come from, and we've published all kinds of books - thoughtful, upsetting, gripping, beatific, vulgar, chaste, unrepentant, life-changing.
Along the way there have been landmarks of fiction - including Alasdair Gray's masterpiece Lanark, and Yann Martel's Life of Pi, the best-ever-selling Booker winner - and non-fiction too - from Barack Obama's memoir Dreams From My Father to Samin Nosrat's new cookery classic Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat. We've campaigned for causes we believe in and fought court cases to get our authors heard.

If you are interested in quoting from a Canongate book, you might not need permission. We handle the rights for many of our books, and you can download our most recent Rights Guide and Canons Guide.
Canongate Books is one of the UK's leading independent publishers (in 2021 we were named Independent Publisher of the Year) and we're looking for a meticulous assistant with an enthusiasm for systems and data to join the Sales team in our London office. This role would work across both the Canongate and Severn House lists and would suit an organised, proactive individual with good communication and problem-solving skills.
The Writers' and Artists' Yearbook is a good place to start. This directory is updated annually and also offers good advice for where to begin on finding an agent. Research agencies and familiarise yourself with their submission guidelines and clients. Often, agencies prefer you to submit to only one agent so do spend some time working out which agents represent books like yours and might best respond to your manuscript.
