Ruth Bigger Opticians have been providing an exceptionally high standard of eye care in the Waterside area of the city for over 30 years. Originally located just opposite Ebrington Barracks on Limavady Road in 1985, as a Waterside addition to Brian Mooney's Queen St practice in the city. Moving to Clooney Terrace in 1999 for more ground floor space, and adding Gavin Fullerton in 2006 and other equipment upgrades along the way!

We were the first optician in the Waterside area of the city, attracting people from Claudy/Dungiven, and out to Strabane and Eglinton/Limavady. Nowadays returning "youngsters" visiting family back home come from much further away! By embracing the latest in modern technology combined with our wide experience in vision care and ocular health, we deliver a superior level of eye care within a comfortable and friendly environment.
Services
We rely on our sight in all aspects of daily life and therefore an eye examination is essential to monitor eye health and maintain the best vision possible. We strive to provide the most thorough eye examinations using the latest technology and equipment so you, the patient, have full confidence in our findings and recommended management.
Coming in via the Glenshane Road A6 pass through Drumahoe following signs for L/Derry. At the Altnagelvin Roundabout take the 2nd exit onto the Dungiven Road/A6 - signposted City Centre. Continue through 2 sets of traffic lights at the next set of lights filter left onto Clooney Terrace - signposted Local Shops and Traffic.
The NHS has launched a new free eye care service for people with minor eye conditions. Instead of waiting for a GP appointment or attending A&E, you can now make an appointment with your local PEARS qualified optician and be seen within one or two working days. We will assess and treat the condition, or make a referral where appropriate.
Modern contact lenses are easy and safe to wear, and give you good vision - even if you need bifocals or varifocals, or have astigmatism. Specialist Ortho-K lenses are worn only at night, so if work is dirty or dusty, or if you are keen on rugby or watersports, they're ideal. Kids find them very easy to use - and they don't get lost!
Your child's sight is precious. At Ruth Bigger Opticians on Clooney Terrace your child has access to top quality FREE eye care and a range of glasses which won't cost a penny - that's right they're FREE! If your child is under 16, they're entitled to a free eye examination, and a voucher to help with the cost of new specs or contact lenses.

Went three times my glasses needed adjusting, almost due another eye test, but couldn't wear my glasses as they were offset on one side, needed new nose pads, but repeated visits failed, I had no glasses for almost three weeks, phoned for third time, met with bad attitude, boots optician sorted my glasses first time without making me feel responsible they were not fitting properly. Been a long standing customer, not returning, very upset!

I have always found visits and appointments with Ruth Bigger opticians to be very positive experiences. A huge thank you to all the staff who are professional, warm, helpful and approachable [a good combination].
Eye tests and reviews are handled sensitively with good advice and guidance offered at all times. When it is time for a change of glasses, the choice and range of frames are second to none. Help is always at hand to consider the best option in choosing frames. I would highly recommend Ruth Bigger Opticians to anyone who wants an excellent all round service.
