Services
Since opening in 1983, the family-run Gars Chinese restaurant turned out to be an institution in Brighton. The Gars family moved from Hong Kong to Brighton in 1955, bringing with them traditional values, a great working ethos, and a desire to create something that reflected both their journey and their new home.
From mouth watering classics to sensational Dim Sum and thirst-quenching drinks, our menus are designed to satisfy all tastes and ages. Explore our menus and discover our unique take on traditional dishes, sharing platters, Dim Sum, and menus for parties and private dining. Our menus are always evolving to reflect changing tastes and new ideas.
Find us in the heart of Brighton Lanes' historic quarter. Once the heart of the fishing town of Brighthelmstone, Brighton Lanes is now a fabulous maze of twisting alleyways, full of boutiques and independent shops. Being just a few steps away from Brighton beach and walking distance from Brighton station, Gars is the ideal place for an impromptu brunch, a romantic dinner, and the best venue for your private function.

My company and family have been visiting Gars since they opened decades ago, we visited again last night and as usual they were wonderful, probably one of the best Chinese restaurants in Sussex. Thoroughly recommended by us all.

Turned up with no reservation, they got us a table ready in no time. Really enjoyed the food and service. Would 100% recommend to anyone that's looking for freshly prepared vibrant Asian food. Found a gem here, I'll be back.

Hard to even give 1 star for a dry, taste absolutely nothing duckling. a sauce came with it, Hoisin sauce, that commercial cheap quality you buy in asda. this piece of meat on the picture is made by someone who doesn't care about quality, tenderness , taste, or show any respect. im very very surprised. Gars, prime location in Brighton.
this is for the duck, the rest of food came with it would be another story.
absolutely bad experience, need tons of improvements. while people really short with money, shame.

The overall welcoming experience of God's restaurant was good. The food was well presented and unfortunately the spare ribs were overcooked a little dry. The pok choi a little bit overdone and sloppy but overall it was an enjoyable experience apart from those two factors.

Visited Gars on Saturday for the first time while in Brighton for the weekend. We sat on the top floor, there was a great atmosphere with a mixture of couples, families and groups of friends.
The food was fantastic, I don’t usually choose Chinese food but this has certainly changed my opinion and I would definitely choose Gars when visiting… again.
Service was brilliant with friendly staff that took the time to chat and explain the menu.
Lovely that’s it’s a an established family business with a huge 38 year history.
I will return and I would certainly recommend.

The best Chinese I’ve been to. They do the basics like prawn toast and duck pancakes really well but menu has some more modern twists. We had the steamed sea bass with ginger and it was incredible. More expansive than the average Chinese, but definitely worth it, quality is incredible.

Gars is an upmarket Chinese restaurant with a great range of pan-asian dishes available. We went as a table of two on a Friday and it did get busy/noisy near the end but otherwise food and service were top notch. We decided on one of the set menus, which we found mostly excellent, with the pork belly being just ok. The first course platter was a flavour and visual feast with scallops, king prawns, chicken satay and squid. Next up crispy duck pancakes, which I always find fun to build, the duck was super crisp and tasty. We were quite stuffed by the 3rd course, but had to polish off the kung po

Absolutely superb.
Amazing food. Good service.
We were seated upstairs, lots of space upstairs. It all seems very efficient and well run. The food was fabulous, well presented and delicious. Best cashew and nuts with yellow bean sauce I've had. The chill beef was great too.
Will definitely be back.

Visited on a Sunday evening - wasn’t busy, maybe 3 or 4 groups were there.
Staff were very attentive and quick to take orders, collect plates etc.
Food was delicious and arrived promptly. Portion sizes were also good.
I can’t list any faults, so I would definitely recommend.

It is difficult to say, because the staff do try hard and are clearly knowledgeable, but my experiences here (have been twice) were fairly underwhelming. I like good food, of course that is my reason for eating out - but Gars feels a bit like one of those nightclubs that has been "styled" to make the sort of person who feels like hiring a hummer limo (and doesn't care about the rental company's advert on the side) feel happy that they have got value for money from their night out. For me, this place is pretentious and overpriced. The food is OK, but for the money I would expect

Really enjoyed my Chinese meal here, cooked really well not greasy or bland. The restaurant in spread across various levels which makes it a little quirky and the decor is modern but not to minimalist. Great flavours and the starter for two was beautiful. I really liked the chilli beef that came in a noodle basket it made a nice touch to a great meal. Although a little pricey (£256 for 6 on a 3 course meal) would be great for a special occasion.

The Lanes and this area are just packed with places to eat so you may wonder how a Chinese restaurant fairs while surrounded with cheap pizza places and also a stones throw from more up market joints like Jamie Oliver's and Hotel Du Vin, well I would say it fairs really well.

This may be a bit more expensive than a normal run of the mill Chinese but the lovely atmosphere and service along with the quality food deserve that extra couple of quid. It has what you would expect on the menu at any Chinese but just a wee bit more tasty, go on by pass Fat Leos, Pizza Express and Zizzi's to give

Gars is very suited to it's South Lanes location - it's classy, contemporary, chic and traditional all rolled in to one.

The decor is not something you'd expect to see in any other Chinese restaurant - sophisticated and very expensive looking, it quietly fuses to together Oriental touches such as reds and golds, with modern and minimalistic white features.

It's sophistication is reflected in the food. The chefs at Gars have managed to take the standard dishes you would expect to find in your local Chinese take away, and bring them up to a gourmet level. Think very posh aromatic

One thing upfront: I think your perception of the service at this place varies greatly depending on where you sit and who serves you. I think downstairs is probably best, but we were seated around the corner on the top floor.

As for the food, I would have to say this is another one of those overpriced, overhyped, overrated Brighton restaurants. It was not bad, but certainly nothing special and the Eastern European waitress had trouble understanding our order.

I have no idea how or why Gars can charge such astronomical prices for food and service that is genuinely little if any better than

While the grand décor and strong reputation suggest high-end stuff, I found Gars rather disappointing, and not even a million miles away from your average takeaway. It can be game of luck with Chinese restaurants though I had decent expectations of this one, and at around £30 a head for food and wine it wasn't cheap. The nondescript 'fish' fillet game in a sweet, sticky goo with overpowering seasoning and MSG. Granted this type of cookery meant to go in for subtlety but there was no space for the fish to stand out. The aromatic duck was fine, though I perhaps expected a little

This a swish Chinese restaurant situated in the heart of Brighton's famous Laines. Its a rarity to find a gorgeously posh sit down Chinese restaurant, rather than a grotty all you can eat or takeaway with tables.

The decor has a modern feel with white tables and glass paneling. The menu is amazing and reasonably priced, Its nice to taste authentic Chinese cuisine rather than the European dough ball fest you usually find in the UK.

Deffo worth a try of you like proper Chinese food.

I love Gars, have been several times and the service has always been great and the food just lovely too. It has grown in size since I first started coming here years ago. They now have three floors, the basement floor is still the same as is the ground floor and they now have an upstairs, all nicely decorated and modern furnishings. It has lost a little of the coziness it used to have when it was just two floors, but it is still a great place for chinese food in brighton. But book if you want a table; its popular!
