Our Early Years team, which incorporates our Nursery and Reception classes, is committed to providing an environment that is rich with possibilities, develops children's independence and puts children right at the centre of their own learning. Our practice is play-based since we believe that play with all its language, physicality and social interaction is what gives children the right and appropriate grounding for their educational journey.
Play is our heartbeat but alongside this we also incorporate direct teaching times across each day to introduce and consolidate skills in phonics, mathematics and personal and emotional development.

Our school vision is for our children to be happy, responsible young people who achieve their best. We also have a school motto: good, better, best, never let it rest, until your good is better and your better best. At Honiton Primary school we value each and every child achieving their full potential academically and also as future citizens.
In this section, you will find a rich and diverse folder of activities that our children (and their families) particiapte in to support their wellbeing and mental health. We hope it inspires you to focus on your wellbeing as well. And so speaks this young ladie's mum about a home-hobby that helps her connect with nature, learn more about the environment whilst also supporting her mental health and wellbeing!
Bones is our much loved school mascot. He is an important part of our school community and regularly visits assemblies, sports days and other key events in our school year. Why a hippo? We chose a hippo as our school mascot as it links back to some of Honiton's history. 140,000 years ago, when the climate in Honiton was more like that of Africa, hippos, along with large deer, oxen and elephants roamed the area.
