The Kentish Rifleman
Classically trained James Pipes has just joined the team and our new menu is now available. Born in about 1552, this charming and traditional Old English Pub is hidden away in the Kentish countryside, between Sevenoaks and Tonbridge. The low, oak beamed ceilings and open fireplaces set the scene for a cosy visit during the winter months.

Our food is homemade, freshly prepared on the premises with produce from local butchers and suppliers. The majority of our ales are from local brewers. Whether visiting for a drink in the Rifle Bar, or to dine in our restaurant, or perhaps a special occasion, our friendly staff look forward to welcoming you!
Services
We are an easy car drive from the towns of Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, Borough Green and 15-20 minutes from the M20 and M25. Take the A25 through the village of Seal towards Ightham and Borough Green. On a left-hand bend in the road take a right turn onto Coach Road and carry on to the village of Ivy Hatch bearing right on Mote Road and then into High Cross Road signposted to Plaxtol.
Our restaurant provides diners with that classic traditional pub feeling, with a modern touch. We take pride in serving the pub classics with a contemporary twist, but our menu also offers some less familiar la carte dishes freshly crafted on the premises. From time to time and of course with the seasons, we change the items on our menu to give diners the best experience from produce available at this time of year.
A cosy and intimate setting by our fire; a relaxed and friendly atmosphere greets guests in the Rifle Bar. The bar boasts low ceilings with original oak beams, a snug and stocked fireplace and plenty of space to settle in for a drink.

We normally run 4 real ales, Harveys from East Sussex, the other 3 being different brews from the local Tonbridge, Westerham and Whitstable breweries; the draught cider is produced in Biddenden and our Curious Brew lager from Tenterden, all Kent.Only the second lager, plus Guinness hail from farther field.
Enjoy classic views of the Weald of Kent on this varied and peaceful walk through charming woodland and gentle field paths following parts of the popular Greensand Way. A small walk with Big Views. A short circular walk from Shipbourne that features stunning views, the historic Fairlawne Estate and the pretty village of Plaxtol.

Probably one of the best pubs I've been to in Kent. The food is absolutely fantastic, the local cider is to die for, and the staff are all very friendly.
They have a backyard that is perfect for a stop on a summer day, but indoors is perfect for a cosy pint/meal.

Excellent service today. Nicely kept beers. Good food. Warm enough to lunch in the tent in the garden.

Looked like a nice enough venue, but our visit was tarnished by the spectacle of a gentleman being set upon and beaten to the ground outside by some young thugs; being a family group, we were very reticent about getting involved, and asked the staff to call the police, which they refused to do saying it wasn't worth the hassle and they could do without the 'bad vibes' - steer clear unless you're prepared to protect yourself from the resident hoodlums, seems to be the message 🤨

As always a very pleasant lunch. A nice sunny day meant we ate out in the garden marquee. I had the fish and chips, excellent. My companions had the pie of the day and the Barnsley chop. Both pronounced their meals as very yummy. All three of us succumbed to the temptation of the pudding list as well.
Well done Victoria and Simon.

Stopped in after visiting Ightham Mote for a cold drink and a sit down.
Really nice garden, there wasn't very many people there when I went so it was very quiet which was was just what we wanted. Feels like if you went back 50 years the pub would be almost the same so it's still got that rural feel to it.
I had a nice cold apple cider, and a glass of water. Perfect for the hot weather yesterday.

Wonderful pub with super friendly service. We came into the pub during hiking, the kitchen is already closed but owner still made sandwiches and chips for us. The pub has >400years history and it’s simply beautiful
