The Allan Ramsay Hotel is a former coaching inn est. 1792) located in the quaint weavers' village of Carlops, nestled at the foot of The Pentland Hills (a Scottish Regional Park) and is only 30 minutes from Edinburgh.
This unique hotel retains much of its 18th Century character with antique decorations, a small library, charming candle-lit restaurant and real log fires. The hotel has four comfortable ensuite guests rooms on the upper floor; which offer single, double, twin and family occupancy options. There is also a lovely self-contained apartment on the ground floor with its own separate entrance.

There is also a self-contained apartment on the ground floor which sleeps 6 and the rooms within this apartment can also be booked on their own. We have free parking available at the front of the hotel. There is also spill over parking to the rear of the hotel (spaces limited) and a public carpark in the village across from Carlops Church.
We'll be building up a list of places of interest local to The Allan Ramsay Hotel that registered users can rate. This will help visitors to the area find the best places to go and might even provide some inspiration for us locals too. If you want more information on any of these, why not pop in and see us - we might have some further literature, advice or even discount tickets for some of them.
Poet; collector of Scots verse and songs; bookseller; credited as having Britain's first subscription library; founded Britain's first school of art and author of Scotland's first folk opera The Gentle Shepherd. Greatly celebrated and reveered in his day. A plaque dedicated to him can be found in Greyfriar's Kirk, Edinburgh; his face is depicted on the Walter Scott monument, Edinburgh and his statue can be seen in Princes Street Gardens.
This year the new Ramsay Tour of Edinburgh was unveiled which highlights key locations in Edinburgh with important connections with Allan Ramsay the poet. We also enjoyed a Presentation and Talk by Lucinda Lax (Curator, 18th Century Art, Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh) at Penicuik House.
Room 1 is located on the upper floor of the hotel at the rear of the building. This quiet room offers single occupancy only and has an ensuite shower room, TV, complimentary tea and coffee making facilities and toiletries. Enjoy a stay in our luxury apartment.
