Our aim is to offer top notch food and service, as well as new dining experiences with our monthly guest chef and experimental food nights. Our menu changes seasonally but is also updated daily depending on availability of fresh produce. We do our best to keep it updated but please accept these menus as a guide not a given.
Services
Surrounded by the wonderful Hampshire countryside and Chawton's rich literary history we have been the village pub for at least 150 years. At the heart of the village we are a family and dog friendly country pub, that offers an unrivalled range of beverages, innovative flavour packed dishes made from local ingredients and unique dining experiences.
Our bar menu is inspired in part by Norma's love of Tapas. Food made for sharing. Each dish is made from fresh ingredients and is packed with flavour. For something more substantial why not try The Greyfriar burger or a bowl of cheesy triple cooked chips with truffle oil? Sunday lunch at The Greyfriar - Put off by overcooked pub Sunday roasts, with tired veg, soggy roasties all swimming in insipid gravy?
Our range of award-winning Fuller's beers have been best in class no less than nine times and ESB has been voted Best Strong Ale an unprecedented seven times making it something of a legend. This also complimented with a guest local ale that changes on a monthly basis. If gin or whisky are your tipple The Greyfriar offers a full range of whiskies and we have an unrivalled selection of craft gins.
The tasting experience at The Greyfriar is constantly evolving and we don't like to tell you too much ahead of time. However, what we can say is that we work closely and seasonally with our incredible suppliers and have a lot of fun doing some proper cooking. Expect seven courses lasting about one and a half hours.
Seating up to 22 people, we can offer the selection of delicious dishes from our a la carte menu or our executive chef can work with you to design a set menu for you and your guests to enjoy. Private dining in The Gallery at the Greyfriar, is the perfect way for small to medium sized groups to mark that special birthday, anniversary to mark another special occasion.

Oh dear. I used to visit this pub after regular meetings in Chawton. Gastropub says it all really. Very pretty, tiny portions of very expensive food. A La carte prices at lunchtime - in fact there was only one menu. £24 for two slithers of duck and a tablespoon of cabbage. Cold soup, cold plates, cold coffee. Service was lukewarm too. We were a party of 9 and I do not think any of us will be going back.
Sadly, the same proprietors have taken over Cassandra’s Cup, so they now have the monopoly in the village.
.... PS. I cannot see a right of reply here. I think there was just a lack of communication

Excellent menu, speedy and courteous service and the attention to detail is noticeable. An extensive and interesting drinks menu accompanying the food too. A lovely cosy atmosphere and friendly proprietors, it creates an inviting local community but is welcoming to the many visitors to the village.
Great for a simple pint but also the ideal venue for a treat.

I stumbled across this pub today when slightly lost looking for a local motorcycle dealership.
On walking into the pub it was busy, I automatically assumed that the answer would be 'NO' when we asked for a table as it looked as if they were at capacity. The young lady that met us as we walked in didn't hesitate and offered us a table immediately. She then took our drinks order within seconds, followed by a food order. The food arrived within 10 minutes and was absolutely superb, as was all of the service provided by the young lady who met us on arrival and two of her other young colleagues. All

A superb dining experience, really great service, lovely food, good ales on tap and a great setting. We were a couple with very few in the pub that night, treated to a complementary amuse Bouche, a delicious cauliflower cheese soup. My king prawns and then fish & chips were excellent, my wife’s halloumi fries, then whipped goats cheese with honeycomb and walnut salad was superb. Really good friendly, cheerful efficient service.

I stumbled upon The Greyfriar last December while I was in town from the U.S., and immediately and profoundly fell in love. Immediately upon entering, the staff welcomed me with cheer and delight--the warmth and care of their demeanor mirrored equally in the love they clearly pour into their food. My burger and fries/chips were fresh and superb--frankly, it was the best burger I've ever had--as was the wonderful wine the bar staff suggested I pair it with. The staff and proprietor Simon were so lovely and knowledgeable I ended up staying at the pub an extra two hours to participate in the

Lovely pub owned by Fullers, (which means a pint of London Pride)!! Situated opposite Jane Austin's house and next nearly door to Cassandra's Tea Rooms. Well laid out and very busy, as you could imagine, with tourists and visitors.
Could be seen as pricey, as a visit to their web site will show you. However, if you're not specific about meal timesthey do an early bird supper 4pm 7pm, when there is a two course meal for £10 or 3 courses for £15.
Not bad, but that rules out early morning visits to Jane's.
Coffee is really good, car park to the North, shared with Cassandra&apos
