Think of soft, rounded chalk hills, watercress farms, thatched cottages and a trout stream running through it. Add in crisp white sheets, fluffy towels, free wi-fi everywhere and officially the best pub food in Dorset (two Good Pub Guide Awards) and you get the perfect English pub with rooms. And all in Dorset's loveliest village.
This is 'real' England. Sydling St Nicholas is recorded in William the Conqueror's Domesday Book written in 1086. A collection of pastel painted houses built from flint and stone, it lies in a valley a mile off the main A37 Dorchester to Yeovil road and every route in to our village is chocolate box pretty.

Services
Forget gastropubs, the Greyhound just does proper fresh food that changes every day, a good wine list, hearty breakfasts and our choice of real ales and lagers. The only thing that's frozen at the Greyhound is the ice cream! The Greyhound sources from local producers which represent the best of British food.
The six bedrooms in our old coaching block across the car park are of differing size but include two big enough for family rooms. If there are more than two staying we can supply good z beds for the room. Three of our rooms are dog friendly too! Our rooms come in two sizes. The standard doubles are 120 per night, our small double is 105 per night and our small twin is 110 per night.

Yesterday, my wife and I decided to do a circular walk from Maiden Newton via Cattistock and Sydling St Nicholas. We decided to stop for lunch at the Greyhound in Sydling. When we arrived, the pub was virtually empty. I was told that due to Covid there were staff shortages but that the kitchen could offer fried onion rings, chips and ketchup! Meanwhile a party of three who apparently had booked were offered the lunch menu. I keep hearing that the hospitality industry has had a tough time over the last two years. Is it any wonder? Perhaps some of the staff have enjoyed being furloughed a little

We had a group of 13 for a family birthday. Quite a long wait for the food. Fair enough as they were busy. Staff very friendly. But the roasts came out and some were kind of ok but some were really sparse for veg. Like a veg garnish at best. So we asked for a bit more veg, which came out once the very small amount of meat and 2 roast potatoes were finished. Then got charged for the 'extra' veg on the bill! All the other food was great. Kids food portions were really generous (bigger than adult roasts!)

Found this place only by chance, it's location in a small village easily passed by. Staff attitude fantastic and friendly, didn't book for food but they fitted us in and a small menu but the food was excellent. A pleasant find on passing through. Yes I would visit again as the best fish and chips I have ever tasted.

We had the most wonderful stay at the Greyhound Inn. It really felt like home away from home and all staff members went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and looked after at all times. The menu offered a superb selection of fresh, locally sourced food that was of exceptional quality. I would highly recommend the Greyhound Inn B&B and restaurant. We'll be back!

We started coming here a few years ago on a recommendation from our holiday let host. We started with a drink 1 evening, then our next visit was for supper and the following year we started our honeymoon here. It really is a little slice of heaven and we return for our wedding anniversary every year ! Not 1 aspect disappoints, good service, atmosphere, delicious food and nothing is too much trouble.... it’s got the lot. Would thoroughly recommend !

Great welcome, Fabulous service. Terrific food.
The staff were outstanding, could not do more for a family group (2 grandparents in their 70's, 2 couples late 30's, early 40's, 2 children under 10) we sadly are here on holiday, this has been the best lunch out we've had all week, & wish we could visit again. Thank you Greyhound Inn.

A nice restaurant. Good selection of food. One of us asked for the fish of the day (salmon), but with something other than the accompaniments on the menu, and they produced a magnificent meal with interesting, well-arranged tastes. The young waiter was unobtrusively attentive, clearly loving his job.
Falafel was not so great, but you can't win them all.

Visited on 24th June, 2021 with my wife for an evening meal. Immediately we were greeted and shown to our table. The initial welcoming was fantastic and extremely professional. My wife is a coeliac and therefore requires gluten free food. This was not a problem and her needs were catered for in a very helpful manner. Basically the service was first… class. We ordered our food, two different types of pan fried tuna. Both dishes were of very high quality. We had puddings; which were of the same standard. Great service and great food = a great evening out. I would highly recommend The Greyhound
