James Brown & Sons
In 1904, after moving from Ballybay, Co. Monaghan, to Belfast, James Brown set up his own business, starting with just a horse and harness which he hired out to a local coal merchant to help with the coal deliveries. Realising the business opportunities of the day and the potential for development, he quickly progressed from hiring his horse to owning a horse-drawn lorry, which he also used for coal deliveries.

It was not long before he expanded the business into furniture removals and by that stage the name James Brown was well known in East Belfast as a well established, reliable local business. In 1932 the business arranged its first funeral.
Services
Providing funeral services to the communities of Belfast and the surrounding areas, via our branches in Newtownards Road, Knockbreda Road, Lisburn Road, Whiteabbey, Dunmurry and Dundonald. There are many different types of funerals to choose from, there is no right or wrong way to do them, just the way that feels best.
Arranging a funeral can feel daunting, particularly if is something you haven't had to do before. Here at James Brown & Sons Funeral Directors we understand what a difficult time this is and it is our main aim to help and guide you. Funerals are incredibly personal so everything will be built around your needs.
James Brown & Sons Funeral Directors in Belfast is situated on Newtownards Road. If you are arriving by car to meet with us, visit your loved one in our Private Restroom or our on-site service venue there is parking available. We can help to plan religious and non-religious funeral services and serve many different faiths.
Cremations are a less popular form of funeral in Northern Ireland as there is only one Crematorium in the country. Most people will want a ceremony at the crematorium - using their onsite service room - but you can also hold the service in a church, funeral home service room or other venue of your choice prior or after the cremation.
Funeral services can be as formal or informal as you would like - and it's entirely up to you as to how religious the service is depending on your beliefs and the wishes of your loved one. James Brown & Sons Funeral Directors can organise the funeral and a burial at your chosen cemetery, graveyard or burial ground and purchase a grave on your behalf where necessary.

Megain Nazarene Seniors Group want to say a huge thank you to Andrew and the whole team at James Brown for their very kind donation to our outing at Coleman’s Garden Centre. It’s been a long year for our older folk and we have had a great day, lovely lunch and really appreciate your kind and thoughtful gift.

Highly recommended
All staff at James brown and son were amazing. Especially those who worked closely with me and sister. From my mum passed away they helped us every step of way. They took good care of mum. They made my mum look like herself, for us to see her n return home. What we wanted for mum they made happen. Answered any questions (as this was my first time arranging a funeral). High standards to the every end after the funeral. They made me feel at ease and helped me so much. That I am greatful for. So thanks to nicola, Anne-Marie and Andrew 😊

I cannot recommend Brown's and their staff highly enough when I recently lost my partner. From the initial phone contact with Nicola to the wonderful Anne Marie who showed such care and understanding of my needs and wishes. To Andrew for his very kind, calm and reassuring presence. The support, kindness and care taken with myself and my loved one was second to none.

I would like to thank Brown's from the bottom of my heart for the way they dealt with my mother's death 2 weeks into lockdown last year. We were all facing the unknown, and huge restrictions were in place regarding funerals. They went well beyond what I had expected, and managed to make an extremely painful time more bearable.

Served its purpose but felt that in view of current restrictions they should have got themselves up to speed with providing a virtual viewing of services. AV equipment sadly below par in premises

I have nothing but the highest praise for James Brown & Son who recently organised my Mum's funeral. We were guided along the way and kept informed of the developments throughout. They treated us sympathetically - yet in a friendly and relaxed way and organised a beautiful, dignified service and burial. I would have no hesitation in recommending this company.

I cannot recommend James Brown & Sons highly enough. My family travelled over from England for my sister's funeral last week and the staff could not have been more helpful. They provided a baby seat for my little grandson, placed the funeral car at our disposal for the whole day and gently guided us through the various expected processes and procedures. I cannot think of any way in which they could have improved their service.
