1 We work with a defined age group. We know how to meet young people'where they are'and we know the different needs of children, teenagers and young adults. 2 We work for a client for as long as they wish. Some problems can be cleared up quickly, some issues affect our whole life and they take longer to work through.

There is no pressure to 'hurry up'. 3 We will work with the parents of a child if we assess that this would be in the best interest of the child. 4 We work from a number of sites across Bristol so as to make journeys as easy as possible. 5 We ask clients to make a contribution to our costs. Please consider a sum between 10 and 40.

Peter has a quarter of a century's experience working as a counsellor and psychotherapist. From his experiences working in addictions counselling with adults, Peter identified a common cause of distress in his adult clients who were misusing substances to mask their distress - childhood trauma. So, Peter founded Help! Counselling in 2001 to meet the needs of young people in Bristol.
Most of us experience times in our lives when the help we need just doesn't seem to be there. We might need someone to talk to whom we can trust and who can help us think things through. Sometimes we can talk to our family or our close friends, but that can feel too close to home, especially for very private problems.
We will ask for a GP's name and surgery and enquire as to any diagnosed condition. We may ask for assessments or additional support if we have concerns. We have accepted referrals to address, for example, depression, panic attacks, problematic behaviour, substance misuse, self-harm and the impact of physical or sexual abuse.
Nilu joined Help! as a trainee counsellor in Integrative Psychotherapy in 2019 and is now also a Trustee of the charity. She has extensive experience in mental health working as an academic, community practitioner and freelance researcher.

As one of Help!'s Trustees, Nilu brings her areas of expertise which include social inequalities, ethnicity and race, migration, gender, ageing, and religion and spirituality to her role in increasing the diversity of the client and counsellor base of the charity, and delivering training on working with difference.
Help! Counselling has a close relationship with two Bristol-based organisations providing training to our members. Contact Point is a Registered Training Establishment of the United Kingdom Association for Transactional Analysis (UKATA).

Through Contact Point's registration with UKATA, its psychotherapy training courses are recognised by the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and the European and International Associations for Transactional Analysis (EATA and ITAA), so its qualifications are recognised at a national, European and international level.
