The Pinegrove has a long and storied history in the city of Carlisle. Once known as a 'monk's haven', the building has been operating as a hotel since the 1960s, providing accommodation for those visiting Cumbria or travelling across the border. The main hotel building was built in 1877 for a wealthy wine merchant, and many of its original features, such as the tiled entrance hall and ornate cornices, remain to this day.

One of our favourite features is the beautiful stained-glass window which was added to the first-floor landing in 1893. Later, the Victorian property was owned by the Bishop of Carlisle, where it gained its status as a monk's haven' known as Pencarl House. This name can still be seen engraved into stone by the entrance to the hotel car park.

Decent room. A bit dated but clean and a nice size. Enjoyed breakfast. A bit spoiled by some drunken guests who talked and knocked on each others doors most of the night. Good parking and lovely staff.

What an absolute gem of a place. Lovely period architecture, very comfortable room, friendly staff and nice little touches like hot chocolate and biscuits in the room as well as tea and coffee. Nice little bar on site. Close to Carlisle Town. All very pleasant.

Good location. The hotel was not serving food but there was a pub/restaurant and KFC within a few minutes walk. Bedroom was a good size with double bed, desk and chair, two further chairs and a wardrobe. Kettle and plenty of coffee, tea and hot chocolate. Staff were friendly.

The rooms are small and very tired, we had the smallest ensuite ever. The bed was very soft, and a double, when most rooms these days offer a Queen size. However the staff were efficient and friendly and the cooked breakfast was excellent.

Stayed in family room at Pine Lodge and was very impressed. We arrived earlier than booking in time but we were allowed into our room. From the first member of staff to the last, I found them all to be very polite. The bar was very clear and well priced. If I was in area again, I would certainly use again.
