Our aim at First Steps is to provide a happy, caring and secure environment where children learn through play and are motivated by their own interest and curiosity. We promote child-led activities and support in the moment planning. Our practice reflects a strong balance between adult support and self-regulation, which gives children the freedom to make decisions and to be allowed to make and correct their own mistakes.
We continuously strive to create a positive partnership with parents and carers. Through which we can work together for the benefit of the child and support them throughout their time at First Steps. We have drawn on wide world initiatives to enhance our knowledge, paying special attention to The Curiosity Approach from England, Reggio Emilia Approach from Italy and Te Whariki from New Zealand.

Services
Our baby and toddler rooms are on the first floor of the nursery and are fully equipped for the under 2.5 year olds. There is a baby room, a toddler room and a separate cot room. There is a separate bathroom for washing and nappy changing and a further interconnecting kitchen for milk/snack preparation.
At First Steps Day Nursery we believe that children are given the best opportunity for learning and development where they are nurtured in a safe, secure and loving environment. We provide a varied and stimulating environment where children are challenged and valued, enabling them to reach their full potential.
Our staff are experienced and qualified Nursery Nurses trained to care, encourage and stimulate all aspects of development. They receive regular training and development opportunities. Each child at the nursery is allocated a key person within their particular room. This will assist the child, and will also help the parent to have familiar face to identify and relate to.
All meals and snacks will be nutritious, avoiding large quantities of fat, sugar, salt, additives, preservatives and colourings and are made fresh on site by our nursery cook. We use organic milk and use Tesco and Bookers for our main shopping source. We ensure we use good quality food. The nursery uses the School Food Trust (Eat Better Start Better) for guidance when compiling our 4 week seasonal menu's.
The nursery operates on strict staff to child ratios and we are limited in the number of children who can be in attendance at any one time. The nursery will always try to meet your needs for extra time and you should speak the nursery manager/deputy to see if we have availability. Yes, though it is important to note that if you do, it is an arrangement between you and the staff member.

My 1 year old just started here and she loves it. Staff are fantastic - they focus on outdoor fun which really suits her. Lily loves being outdoors - she usually has to wait until I take her out for cycles on my bike in the evenings or weekends but now she has loads of outdoor fun and comes home very cheerful!! Beautiful.

Both sons attended, the elder for a few months, the younger for a year. they were both very happy here, and was a great help in the transition of our settling into to the Cambridge area from Sussex. we couldn't have managed without such a resource, close to where we were living, and lovely staff to care about our children.
