Amersham Museum reopened in summer 2017 after a major refurbishment and expansion. The museum's medieval hall house is now more clearly visible for visitors to see and enjoy. The new museum displays explore life in the town in 1580, 1775, 1892, 1939 and 1964. Complete your visit with a wander through our wonderful herb garden, which is packed with plants used for medicinal purposes.
We are an independent museum and registered charity, run almost entirely by volunteers. We do not receive funding from local or central government. Donations help support the running costs of the museum and the creation of special projects with community groups, older people and schools.

Helpful tip: to find a particular house, person or street, try using the SEARCH box in the left hand column of every page (or below on mobile phones). Although we call it the Amersham History section of this website, it does not pretend to provide a full history of the town; for that we recommend Julian Hunt's excellent book A History of Amersham.
Select the day and the arrival time to book a ticket. You must arrive during your allotted time but you may stay as long as you like during opening hours. If your group is larger than five, please book two consecutive booking slots or contact the museum directly about a group visit: info@amershammuseum.org.
Join a guided walk of Amersham Old Town for a fascinating insight into the history of the town, its inhabitants and its development. Here you will see many of the details of the town that you may never have noticed before. Join a guided Tudor Walk to learn about life - and death - in 16th century Amersham - food and drink, clothing, health and the Lollards martyrs.
The museum continues to welcome pre-arranged visits by groups outside normal museum opening hours, during the day or in the evening. An introductory talk, either before the visit or when you arrive at the museum, can usually be arranged if requested. We can also arrange a guided walk as part of your visit to the museum.
If you are coming by train from London, Chiltern Rail trains from Marylebone or the Metropolitan line from Baker Street go to Amersham-on-the-Hill. From the station, there are buses to Old Amersham. There is a very pleasant walk to the Museum from Amersham Station through woods and fields, with fine views.
