Our background is farming and this makes us different from most butchers, with our customers enjoying meat that is particularly tender. Why? Because we understand how rearing, handling and transporting an animal affects the texture of meat. A healthy animal that has lived in a natural, low-stress environment will produce the most tender meat.

Everything we do, from our farming methods right through to animal transport, is geared towards creating quality, tender meat. Most of the meat we use comes directly from our own farm in Twynholm, just a few miles from the Ballards Butchers shop. We are traditional beef and sheep farmers and our animals benefit from the lush, rich, grassy landscapes that Galloway is famous for.

Catering Report

Our Ballards Hog Roast and Catering Trailers provides event organisers, festivals, private functions and country shows with a high quality catering option with strong customer appeal. We were the first business in the area providing hog roasts when we introduced Ballards Hog Roasts eleven years ago, and our experience of selecting, preparing, cooking and serving the hog can be clearly seen in the quality and flavour of the roast itself.

Came here for a cheeky sausage roll based on the recommendation of our friend Louisa Ramsey (see photo). I bought a pie and a sausage roll and enjoyed them in good company.

Having used this butcher for years while touring in the area we were very disappointed recently.We bought chicken stir fry for two only to find it contained only four small pieces of chicken and we were charged £8.I sent an email to complain and received no reply.Fortunately there are two other excellent butchers in Castle Douglas,and we will shop with them in future.

An excellent traditional butcher's shop with a range of local produce including home made pies and savouries. Locally sourced free range eggs are on sale, and game is sometimes available. Helpful and friendly service, always happy to talk about the source of their meat.
