Our original Australian sister company was founded in 1896 by George Sargent and his wife, Charlotte, who were renowned pastry cooks in the late 19th and early 20th Century. They ran a very popular small bakery before a win on an early Tattersall's horse-racing sweep gave them enough money to open their first shop, baking 700 loaves every day.
In the early 1900s the Sargents started catering for the state and federal parliaments and also opened the first of many Sargents' Tea Rooms. They were keen to help out the families who had helped them grow the various branches of their business and income from the tea rooms enabled the Sargents to support the families of soldiers sent to fight in World War One.
